The Hyundai Genesis sedan and coupe: where the Genesis brand began

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Hyundai Genesis sedan was Hyundai's first rear-wheel-drive car in the US, unveiled in January 2008 and sold for the 2009–2016 model years. The Genesis Coupe followed for 2010. After Hyundai made Genesis a separate luxury brand in November 2015, the sedan continued as the Genesis G80 from the 2017 model year.

Hyundai Genesis sedan and coupe (2009–2016) history

Hyundai unveiled the Genesis sports sedan at the North American International Auto Show in January 2008, benchmarked against the Mercedes E-Class, Infiniti M and Lexus GS, with a promised starting price under $30,000. It rode on an all-new rear-wheel-drive architecture, Hyundai's first in a US model, and went on sale that summer as a 2009 model, backed by what Hyundai called its largest marketing campaign ever.

The same architecture spawned the Genesis Coupe, revealed in New York in March 2008 and on sale in spring 2009 as a 2010 model. The second-generation 2015 Genesis sedan added HTRAC all-wheel drive, a first for a Hyundai sedan, and Hyundai noted the original had been named North American Car of the Year in 2009.

On November 4, 2015, Hyundai Motor announced Genesis as a stand-alone luxury brand. The sedan carried on as the 2017 Genesis G80 with the same 3.8-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 choices, joined by the G90 flagship.[1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[6]
