Sport, Si and Type R are three different levels

On the current Civic, Sport is a regular trim. The 2027 Sport sedan uses the same 150-hp 2.0-liter four and CVT as the base LX. It adds 18-inch gloss black alloys, an 8-speaker stereo, paddle shifters, blind spot information and remote start. The Sport Hybrid swaps in the two-motor hybrid system, rated at 200 hp total system output.

The Si is a performance version of the Civic sedan. For 2022–2026 it used a 200-hp 1.5-liter turbo, a manual-only six-speed with rev-matching taken from the Type R, a helical limited-slip differential and bigger brakes than the Sport. Honda's 2022 launch release says it is assembled in Ontario, Canada, with its engine built only at the Anna, Ohio engine plant.

The Type R is its own hatchback. It uses the 315-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter K20C, a dual-axis MacPherson strut front suspension, adaptive dampers, Brembo four-piston front calipers and 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Honda describes it as the only car in its class sold only with a manual transmission.

Civic Sport vs Si: what the extra money buys

The Si has 50 more horsepower than the gas Sport (200 vs 150) and 59 lb-ft more torque (192 vs 133), with peak torque from 1,800 rpm. It also has a thicker front stabilizer bar (27.0 mm vs 26.5 mm), larger brake rotors (12.3/11.1 in vs 11.1/10.2 in) and a limited-slip differential, which the Sport spec sheet does not list. Curb weight is close: 2,952 lb for the Si and 2,926 lb for the Sport sedan.

The trade-offs are fuel economy and price. The 2026 Si is rated 27/37/31 mpg, compared with 31/39/34 for the 2027 Sport sedan. The Si MSRP is $30,995 (2026), $4,000 above the 2027 Sport sedan's $26,995. Note that these are different model years and different destination charges ($1,150 vs $1,295).

If you want a manual Civic but not a Type R, the Si is the one to look at. Honda's 2027 pricing lists only a CVT or the hybrid on every sedan and hatchback trim.

Civic Si vs Type R: hardware, not just horsepower

The Type R makes 115 more horsepower than the Si (315 vs 200) and 118 lb-ft more torque (310 vs 192). Its peak power comes at 6,500 rpm, and it has a 7,000-rpm redline. The rest of the car is built to match that output, which is why it costs more.

At $48,695 before a $1,295 destination charge, the 2027 Type R costs $17,700 more than the 2026 Si's $30,995 MSRP. The Type R seats four and is a hatchback. It weighs 3,188 lb, which is 236 lb more than the Si, and it returns 22/28/24 mpg. Honda lists regular unleaded fuel, with premium recommended.

  • Front suspension: the Si uses a MacPherson strut; the Type R uses a dual-axis MacPherson strut.
  • Dampers: the Type R has an Adaptive Damper System with Comfort, Sport, Individual and +R modes. Honda's 2026 Si spec sheet lists no adaptive dampers.
  • Brakes: the Si has 12.3/11.1-in rotors; the Type R has 13.8/12.0-in rotors with Brembo four-piston aluminum front calipers.
  • Tires: the Si uses 235/40R18 all-season tires; the Type R uses 265/30ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on 9.5-in-wide wheels.
  • Gearing: both have a six-speed manual, rev-matching and a helical LSD. The final drive is 4.350 on the Si and 3.842 on the Type R.

Is there a 2027 Civic Si?

No. On July 23, 2026, Honda announced that Civic Si production would pause after the 2026 model year because of evolving business conditions. Honda said an all-new Si will return in the coming years but gave no date. It expected new 2026 Si inventory to last into early 2027.

Honda calls this the Si's fourth production pause. The earlier ones were in 1988, 1996–1998 and 2021. Honda's 2027 Civic release covers only the sedan and hatchback trims and does not mention an Si.

What changed on the 2027 Type R

Honda calls the 2027 Type R the sixth generation of a nameplate that debuted in Japan as a 1997 model. The year marks its 30th anniversary globally and its 10th in North America. Output stays at 315 hp. The changes are a redesigned front fascia for better engine cooling, a deeper front splitter for more downforce, retuned +R damping, quicker Rev Match, a yoke spring on the brake pedal for a more direct feel, and a new Meteorite Gray Metallic color.

Inside, the 2027 car adds heated front seats, an Ultrasuede dash and upper door panels, Google built-in, Alexa built-in, two USB-C ports and an auto-dimming mirror. Post-Collision Braking is now standard. The MSRP rose to $48,695 from $42,895 for the 2023 launch car, and destination rose from $1,095 to $1,295.

US Type R history: 2017 to today

The first Civic Type R sold in America went on sale June 15, 2017. It came in one Touring trim at $33,900 before an $875 destination charge. It had a 306-hp, 295 lb-ft 2.0-liter turbo, a six-speed manual, a helical LSD, adaptive dampers with Comfort, Sport and +R modes, 20-inch wheels and Brembo front brakes.

For 2020 Honda fitted two-piece front rotors and more fade-resistant pads. It also made the grille opening 13% larger, sped up the adaptive damper software, stiffened the bushings, added a counterweighted shift knob and made Honda Sensing standard. Price was $36,995 before $955 destination. The 2021 Limited Edition was limited to 600 US units. It was about 50 lb lighter than the standard car, with forged BBS wheels and Michelin Cup 2 tires, at $43,995.

The all-new 2023 Type R reached dealers on Oct. 28, 2022 at $42,895 before a $1,095 destination charge. Its output rose to 315 hp and 310 lb-ft.

Civic Si history: four decades of affordable performance

Honda says the Si was first introduced for the 1986 model year. Its 2017 history dates the original CRX Si to 1985, with the Civic Si hatchback following a year later. Through 2000 every Si used a five-speed manual and an engine of 1.6 liters or less. The 1992–1995 car was the first Civic with VTEC, and the 1999–2000 Si Coupe made 160 hp at 8,000 rpm.

The 2002–2005 Si was a hatchback built in Swindon, England. It used the first K-Series engine in an Si. The 2006–2011 car added a six-speed manual and a limited-slip differential, and the sedan arrived for 2007. Honda says the sedan became the most popular Si body style. The 2012–2015 Si used a 2.4-liter, the largest Si engine to that point.

The 2017–2020 Si was the first turbocharged one, at 205 hp and 192 lb-ft, offered as a coupe or sedan. The 2022–2026 Si was sedan-only. It traded 5 hp of peak output for a broader power curve, and it gained rev-matching and a single-mass flywheel 26% lighter than the previous dual-mass unit.

Shopping for a Si or Type R

For a new Type R, or a leftover 2026 Si, compare dealers on target discount off MSRP in dollars and percent. Do this before rebates and without dealer add-ons. Honda prices the Type R and Si as single trims, so the remaining choices are paint (premium paint is $455 extra on the 2027 Type R) and any accessories the dealer has added.

For used cars, the model table shows which output and hardware each year range came with. One example is the 2017–2020 Si, which had two-mode adaptive dampers and was offered as a coupe or sedan. The 2022–2026 Si was a sedan only.
