Hyundai Gamma 1.6 GDI and Turbo Engine: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

Gamma is Hyundai and Kia's 1.6L four-cylinder family. The direct-injected 1.6 GDI powered the 2012–2019 Accent, Rio and Soul and the 2012–2017 Veloster, and a 1.6 Turbo-GDI version appeared in the Veloster Turbo and later Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Kona and Optima models. Gamma 1.6 GDI Veloster and Soul models are Engine II settlement vehicles.

EPA listings show a direct-injected 1.6L in the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio for 2012–2019, the Veloster for 2012–2017 and the Kia Soul for 2012–2019. The Engine II settlement names the Gamma 1.6-liter GDI in the 2012–2017 Veloster and 2012–2016 Soul. The turbocharged 1.6 arrived in the 2013 Veloster Turbo; Kia's 2019 recall filing for the Optima names the Gamma 1.6L Turbo-GDI, and EPA lists a 1.6L turbo in the 2016–2020 Optima, 2015-on Sonata, 2016–2018 Tucson, 2017–2020 Elantra and 2018–2021 Kona.

Two Gamma-specific recalls stand out. Kia's 19V120 updated catalytic-converter overheating protection logic on 378,967 2012–2016 Souls with the 1.6L GDI, because high exhaust temperatures could damage the converter and then the pistons. Hyundai's 19V204 updated engine software on 16,487 2013 Veloster Turbos to prevent pre-ignition. Later turbo 1.6 engines with CVVD belong to the Smartstream family.

Catalytic-converter overheating that can damage pistons (2012–2016 Soul) (2012–2016)

Major repair

Kia's 19V120 says high exhaust-gas temperatures in 2012–2016 Souls with the 1.6L GDI may damage the catalytic converter, which can lead to abnormal combustion, piston damage and possible connecting-rod failure. Dealers upgrade the Catalytic Overheating Protection engine-control logic and replace a damaged converter, and the engine if needed.[4]

Symptoms

  • Rough running or misfire
  • Loss of power
  • Engine knock after converter damage

Check before buying

  • Run the VIN for 19V120 (Kia SC176)
  • Ask whether the converter or engine was replaced under the recall

Program: Safety recall 19V120

Connecting-rod bearing failure (Engine II class) (2012–2017)

Major repair

The Engine II settlement lists the 2012–2017 Veloster and 2012–2016 Soul with the Gamma 1.6L GDI. Recalls 20V746 (2015–2016 Veloster) and 20V750 (2014–2015 Soul, among other Kia models) cover engine damage from premature bearing wear or engine-compartment fire, with inspection, engine replacement as needed and KSDS software.[2][5][6]

Symptoms

  • Engine knock
  • Check-engine light and engine protection mode after KSDS

Check before buying

  • Run the VIN for 20V746 or 20V750
  • Confirm KSDS is installed

Frequently asked questions

Which Hyundai and Kia cars use the Gamma 1.6 engine?

EPA listings show the direct-injected 1.6L in the 2012–2019 Accent and Rio, 2012–2017 Veloster and 2012–2019 Soul. The 1.6 Turbo-GDI was in the Veloster Turbo, 2015-on Sonata, 2016–2018 Tucson, 2017–2020 Elantra, 2018–2021 Kona, 2016–2020 Optima, Forte and Soul Turbo.

Is the Gamma 1.6 part of the Hyundai/Kia engine settlement?

The Engine II settlement lists the 2012–2017 Veloster and 2012–2016 Soul with the Gamma 1.6-liter GDI as class vehicles. It extends the powertrain warranty to 15 years or 150,000 miles from original delivery for damage from connecting-rod bearing failure, generally if KSDS is installed.

What is the Kia Soul catalytic converter recall?

Kia's 19V120 (February 2019) covers 378,967 2012–2016 Souls with the 1.6L GDI. High exhaust temperatures can damage the converter, which can then damage pistons. Dealers update the overheating-protection software and replace the converter or engine as needed.

Is the 1.6 turbo in newer Hyundai and Kia models still a Gamma?

Newer 1.6 turbos with Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) are part of the Smartstream family; Hyundai's 2026 Tucson and 2027 Santa Fe spec sheets list the 1.6L Turbo-GDI under Smartstream. CarWhere covers those on the Smartstream page.
