Hyundai Smartstream Engines: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

Smartstream is the name Hyundai uses for its current engine family. In US models that means a 2.5L GDI + MPI four rated at 186–191 hp, a 1.6L turbo used alone (190–201 hp) and in hybrids (231–232 hp combined), a 2.0L MPI with an IVT (147 hp) and a 1.6L MPI in the Venue (121 hp).

Hyundai's 2026 Tucson spec sheet groups its 2.5L GDI + MPI and 1.6L Turbo-GDI engines under the Smartstream Engine Family, and the 2027 Santa Fe sheet lists the Smartstream 2.5L Turbo and Smartstream 1.6L Turbo hybrid. Hyundai also calls the Venue's 1.6L a Smartstream four and the Elantra's CVT-type gearbox the Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). Kia uses the same engines without the Smartstream label in its US spec sheets.

The naturally aspirated 2.5L combines direct and port injection with a 13.0:1 compression ratio. The 1.6L turbo has a 75.6 × 89.0 mm bore and stroke and Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD). It is the gas engine in the Tucson, Santa Fe, Sorento, Sportage and Carnival hybrids. The 2.5L turbo has its own page. Engine recalls on current Smartstream-era models have been small, and the filings do not name the engine: a 2025 batch of loose connecting-rod bolts and a 2024 EGR-valve short circuit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Hyundai Smartstream engine?

Smartstream is Hyundai's name for its current powertrain family. Hyundai's 2026 Tucson and 2027 Santa Fe spec sheets list the 2.5L GDI + MPI, 2.5L Turbo and 1.6L Turbo-GDI engines as Smartstream, and the Venue's 1.6L is a Smartstream four. Kia uses the same engines without the name.

How much horsepower does the Smartstream 2.5 make?

In 2026–2027 models it is rated at 191 hp and 181 lb-ft in the Sonata and Santa Cruz, 187 hp and 178 lb-ft in the Tucson and Sportage, and 186 hp and 178 lb-ft in the Kia Sorento and K5.

Which hybrids use the Smartstream 1.6 turbo?

The Hyundai Tucson, Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, Sportage and Carnival hybrids, plus the Tucson, Santa Fe, Sorento and Sportage plug-in hybrids. Combined output is 231 hp in the 2026 Tucson Hybrid and 2027 Santa Fe Hybrid and 232 hp in the 2027 Sorento and Sportage hybrids.

What is the Smartstream IVT?

IVT stands for Intelligent Variable Transmission, Hyundai's name for the continuously variable-type gearbox paired with the 2.0L MPI engine in the Elantra and Kona and the 1.6L in the Venue. Kia uses the same IVT name in its K4 and Seltos specs.

Have Smartstream engines been recalled?

The engine-related recalls have been small. 25V549 and 25V548 (August 2025) cover 59 Hyundai and Kia vehicles with possibly loose connecting-rod bolts, and 24V308 covers 13,511 2024 Elantra, Venue and Kona vehicles with an EGR valve that can short. Kia's piston-ring recalls for the 2.0L MPI are covered on the Nu page.
