Jeep Wrangler generations: YJ, TJ, JK and JL
By CarWhere Research · Updated
The Jeep Wrangler has had four generations: YJ (1987–1995), TJ (1997–2006), JK (2007–2018) and JL (2018–today). The YJ replaced the CJ-7, the TJ added coil springs, the JK introduced the four-door Unlimited and the JL added a turbo four, the 4xe plug-in hybrid and the 470 hp Rubicon 392. Jeep sold its five millionth Wrangler in 2023.
Jeep Wrangler history
The Wrangler descends directly from the 1941 Willys MB through the CJ-5 and CJ-7. When it replaced the CJ-7 for 1987, the YJ added a lower center of gravity and more comfort while keeping the removable top, fold-down windshield and solid axles that define the line.
The 1997 TJ returned to round headlamps and moved to coil springs, and the 2003 Rubicon made locking axles a factory item. The 2007 JK was the first clean-sheet Wrangler and introduced the four-door Unlimited, which turned the Wrangler into a family vehicle; 2,165,678 JKs were built before the last one rolled off the Toledo line on April 28, 2018.
The JL launched for 2018 with a new eight-speed automatic and a 270 hp turbocharged four alongside the 3.6-liter V6. The plug-in hybrid 4xe and the V8 Rubicon 392 followed for 2021. Jeep sold its five millionth Wrangler in August 2023 and says more than 80 percent of them are still on the road.[1],[2],[4],[5]

Engine and drivetrain facts
- Before the Wrangler, the CJ-5 (1955–1983) and CJ-7 (1976–1986) were the civilian Jeeps; the YJ kept the CJ-7's 93.4-inch wheelbase.
- The TJ was the last Wrangler with AMC's 4.0-liter inline-six; the JK moved to V6 engines.
- The JL Rubicon 392's 6.4-liter HEMI V8 is rated at 470 hp and 470 lb-ft; the 4xe pairs a 2.0-liter turbo four with electric motors for 375 hp and 470 lb-ft combined.
- A 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 rated at 260 hp and 442 lb-ft was offered in the JL for several model years.

What to check before you buy one
- Pick the generation first, then the configuration: two-door vs Unlimited, top type, axles and transfer case matter more to value than the badge.
- On every generation, inspect the frame and body for rust, and look for water leaks around tops and doors.
- Lift kits and larger tires are common; check steering components, control arms and driveline angles, and whether the axle gearing was changed to match.
- Confirm Rubicon equipment (locking axles, 4:1 transfer case, disconnecting front sway bar on JK and JL) rather than relying on decals — the build sheet verifies the factory equipment on record.
- On a 4xe, ask for charging and battery service history; on a Rubicon 392, confirm the HEMI V8 against the VIN.

How to verify a Jeep Wrangler's factory options
Two Wranglers of the same year can differ by thousands of dollars in factory equipment — Rubicon axles, tops, Sky One-Touch roof, cold-weather and technology groups, gear ratios. CarWhere checks a Wrangler's 17-character VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, lists the equipment it was built with. It does not promise a complete option list for every VIN.
Jeep Wrangler build sheet by VIN
CarWhere checks a specific VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, lists the equipment the vehicle was built with — engine, transmission, axle ratio, paint, interior and option packages — in plain English. Coverage varies by VIN and model year and is strongest for recent vehicles.
