Lexus hybrids: from the RX 400h to plug-ins and EVs
By CarWhere Research · Updated
Lexus sold the first luxury hybrid, the RX 400h, as a 2006 model. It followed with the GS 450h sport sedan, the V8 LS 600h L, and the hybrid-only HS 250h and CT 200h. Today hybrids run across the range, alongside plug-in hybrids and the RZ and ES battery-electric models.
Lexus hybrids and electrified models history
Lexus revealed the RX 400h in Detroit in January 2004 and sold it as a 2006 model: the world’s first luxury hybrid SUV and the first Lexus hybrid. It paired the RX 330’s V6 with three electric motor-generators.
Hybrids then spread across the range: the GS 450h, the industry’s first luxury hybrid sport sedan; the LS 600h L, the first full V8 hybrid; the HS 250h, the first hybrid-only luxury vehicle, in August 2009; and the CT 200h compact, Lexus’s fifth hybrid, in 2011.
Lexus says it sold more than one million hybrids worldwide in just over 10 years after the RX 400h, and two million electrified vehicles by 2021. The RZ became its first battery-electric model in 2022, and the 2026 ES is offered as a hybrid and an EV.[1],[2],[3],[4]

Engine and drivetrain facts
- The 2006 RX 400h used the RX 330’s V6 with three electric motor-generators and was rated by EPA at 28 mpg city and 25 mpg highway; it was among the first Lexus models with Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM).
- The HS 250h introduced Lexus’s first four-cylinder gas engine with Lexus Hybrid Drive: a 147-hp Atkinson-cycle engine and 187 total system horsepower, EPA-rated at 35 mpg combined.
- The 2025 LX 700h pairs a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 with a hybrid system for 457 hp and 583 lb-ft. Unlike other Lexus hybrids it keeps an alternator and a starter, so it can keep driving on engine power alone if the hybrid system fails.

What to check before you buy one
- Ask for hybrid-system service records and any hybrid battery work, and check whether any factory hybrid warranty coverage remains.
- Confirm the powertrain from the VIN-decoded data. Many Lexus models were sold as both gas and hybrid versions with similar styling.
- On plug-in hybrids and EVs, check charging equipment and whether the battery’s remaining range matches what the car showed when new.
