Mazda engines

By CarWhere Research · Updated

Current US Mazdas use three gasoline engines: the Skyactiv-G 2.0 and 2.5 four-cylinders (155–187 hp; 181 hp in the MX-5), the Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo (227 hp on regular, up to 256 hp on premium), and the 3.3-liter inline-six turbo in the CX-90 and CX-70 (280–340 hp). The rotary powered the RX-7 and the 2004–2011 RX-8.

Each page gives Mazda-published horsepower and torque by model year and application, the models each engine went into, and the engine-related recalls in NHTSA's recall dataset. Figures come from Mazda North American Operations press releases and specification sheets, Mazda Motor Corporation history pages and EPA listings. Where Mazda hasn't published a figure, the page leaves it blank.

Know which engine and transmission a car was built with.

Mazda builds the same model with more than one engine, transmission and drivetrain. Frequently asked questions

What engine does my Mazda have?

Most 2014-on Mazda3, CX-5, CX-30, CX-50 and Mazda6 models have the Skyactiv-G 2.5; Turbo-badged versions and every 2016–2023 CX-9 have the 2.5 Turbo. The MX-5 uses the Skyactiv-G 2.0. CX-90 and CX-70 3.3 Turbo models have the inline-six, and their PHEVs a 2.5 four plus a motor.

What does Skyactiv mean?

Skyactiv is Mazda's name for the engines, transmissions, bodies and chassis it introduced from 2011. Skyactiv-G is the gasoline engine line. In the US it covers the 2.0 and 2.5 four-cylinders and the 2.5T turbo, and the inline-six carries the e-Skyactiv G name.

Which Mazda engine is the most powerful?

The e-Skyactiv G 3.3L inline-six turbo in Turbo S form: 340 hp and 369 lb-ft on premium fuel in the CX-90 and CX-70. Mazda calls it the most powerful mass-production gasoline engine it has developed.

What engine is in the CX-90 PHEV?

The CX-90 and CX-70 PHEV use Mazda's e-Skyactiv PHEV system: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery, rated 323 hp and 369 lb-ft combined on premium fuel.

Does Mazda still make a rotary engine?

Not for the US. The last US rotary car was the 2011 RX-8. Mazda produced the MX-30 R-EV, which uses a rotary engine as a generator, from 2023, but its US MX-30 was battery-electric only.
