Mazda RX-8 problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The best-known Mazda RX-8 problem is rotary engine core wear: in 2008 Mazda extended engine core coverage on all 2004–2008 cars to 8 years or 100,000 miles. The RX-8 is also under Takata driver and passenger air bag recalls with a do-not-drive advisory, plus fuel pump leak recalls from engine heat and a 2004 ball joint recall.

CarWhere lists 5 documented RX-8 issues, including 4 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source. Recall entries come from NHTSA's recall dataset on the DOT open-data portal, which may not list every campaign, so run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

In May 2008 Mazda extended warranty coverage on rotary engine core components for all 2004–2008 RX-8s to 8 years (96 months) from the original warranty start date or 100,000 miles. Coverage included the rotor housings and internal parts plus internal seals and gaskets, transferred to later owners, and Mazda offered reimbursement for qualifying earlier repairs. The extension has now expired on every eligible car by age.

Symptoms

  • Hard starting, especially when hot
  • Loss of power or low compression
  • Rough idle or misfires

Takata driver air bag inflator: do-not-drive advisory (recall 17V474) (2004–2008)

Safety recall
Generation:
1st gen (2004–2011)
Years:
2004–2008
Powertrain:
All

The dual-stage driver frontal air bag in 2004–2008 RX-8 models (and 2003–2008 Mazda6, 2006–2007 Mazdaspeed6) can rupture from moisture intrusion. Mazda advised owners not to drive until fixed and repeated that advice in August 2024 for unrepaired 2004–2008 RX-8s. The 308,992 count covers all three models.

Symptoms

  • No warning sign; the defect shows up only when the air bag deploys in a crash

Check before buying

  • Run the 17-digit VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete
  • Also check mazdausa.com/recalls by VIN
  • If an air bag recall is open, arrange a tow to a Mazda dealer rather than driving the car

Frequently asked questions

Did Mazda extend the RX-8 engine warranty?

Yes. Special Service Program 77 (May 2008) extended rotary engine core coverage on 2004–2008 RX-8s to 8 years or 100,000 miles, covering rotor housings, internal parts, seals and gaskets. It has now run out on every eligible car.

Is the RX-8 in the Takata air bag recall?

Yes. 2004–2008 RX-8s have a driver inflator recall (17V474) and 2004–2011 cars have passenger inflator recalls. Mazda’s 2024 advisory tells owners of unrepaired cars not to drive them.

Why does the RX-8 have fuel pump recalls?

Engine and exhaust heat can deteriorate fuel pump sealing rings and crack a fuel pump pipe. Recalls 16V793 and 17V354 (2004–2008) and 21V744 (2009–2011) replace parts and add insulation.

What should I check before buying an RX-8?

A rotary compression test, records of any engine replacement, and proof that every air bag and fuel pump recall is complete.

How do I check an RX-8 for open recalls?

Enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup and on Mazda’s recall page, and tow the car to a dealer if an air bag recall is open.
