Mercedes-Benz 190 E history: the W201, 2.3-16 Cosworth and Evolution II

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Mercedes-Benz 190 E belongs to the W 201 compact series, of which 1,879,629 were built before production ended in 1993. Its icons are the 16-valve 190 E 2.3-16 — 19,487 built, with a Cosworth-developed cylinder head — and the 502-unit 2.5-16 Evolution and Evolution II homologation specials for the DTM.

Mercedes 190 E (W 201) history

The 201 series was Mercedes' first compact class. When production ended — at Sindelfingen in February 1993 and at Bremen in August — 1,879,629 had been built, and the 202-series C-Class took over.

The 190 E 2.3-16 added a 16-valve, twin-cam head developed with Cosworth to the 2.3-liter four. Mercedes-Benz Classic lists 19,487 built and 185 hp in ECE form, or 170 hp with a catalytic converter from September 1985.

For DTM touring-car racing Mercedes needed a new short-stroke 2.5-liter engine, and FIA rules required at least 500 road cars to carry it. That produced the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution (Geneva, March 1989) and the Evolution II (Geneva, 1990) — 502 of each, painted blue-black metallic.[1],[2],[3]

What to check before you buy one

  • Confirm a 2.3-16, 2.5-16 or Evolution by VIN, engine number and documentation — 16-valve conversions and Evo body-kit replicas exist.
  • On Evolution and Evolution II cars, ask for the build number and provenance; these are numbered homologation cars and values depend heavily on originality.
  • Check for rust at jacking points and wheel arches typical of 30-plus-year-old steel bodies, and inspect the self-leveling rear suspension if fitted.
  • Ask for the service history of the 16-valve head and timing chain.

How to verify the factory options of any Mercedes 190 E (W 201)

The factory data card is the cleanest way to confirm a 16-valve 190 E: it lists the model code, engine, paint and every option code the car was built with.

All 190 E models fall in the 17-character-VIN era. Many Evolution cars were built for Europe, so detailed build data may not exist for every VIN.[5]
