MINI Cooper S engines by generation
First generation (2002–2006; Convertible to 2008): a supercharged 1.6L four, which BMW Group calls a compressor engine and quotes at 120 kW (163 hp). The engine was built in Brazil at a plant BMW owned jointly with Chrysler. EPA rated a 2006 manual Cooper S at 22/29/24 mpg.
Second generation (2007–2013): the Cooper S switched to a 1.6L turbocharged four. BMW quoted 128 kW (175 hp) at launch. By 2013 the 1.6L MINI TwinPower Turbo, with twin-scroll turbo, overboost, direct injection and Valvetronic-based valve control, made 135 kW (184 hp). That year it won its class at the International Engine of the Year Awards for the seventh time running. BMW's Hams Hall plant in England began building MINI engines in 2006.
Third generation (2014–2024): a 2.0L turbocharged four. MINI USA's US spec sheet for the 2016 Cooper S Convertible rates it at 189 hp at 5,000 rpm and 207 lb-ft from 1,250 rpm. The base Cooper moved to a 1.5L turbo three-cylinder (134 hp, 162 lb-ft).
Fourth generation (2025–present): still a 2.0L turbo four, now rated by MINI USA at 201 hp and 221 lb-ft. It comes only with a 7-speed dual-clutch, and the Cooper S 2 Door runs 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds. The base Cooper C now also uses a 2.0L turbo four, at 161 hp.
2027 Cooper lineup and prices
For 2027, MINI USA sells the Cooper as a 2 Door (Cooper C, Cooper S, JCW), a 4 Door (Cooper C, Cooper S) and a Convertible (Cooper C, Cooper S, JCW). Base prices did not change from 2026. A Cooper C 2 Door costs $29,500 with Signature Trim, $31,900 with Signature Plus and $33,600 with Iconic. A Cooper S 2 Door costs $32,800, $35,200 or $36,900 with the same trims.
The 4 Door costs $1,000 more than the matching 2 Door. Convertibles start at $34,600 (Cooper C) and $37,900 (Cooper S). The destination and handling charge rose to $1,350 on July 1, 2026. The Oxford Edition returned for 2027 at $25,500 (2 Door) and $26,500 (4 Door), based on the Cooper C.
2 Door vs 4 Door vs Convertible
The 4 Door is 6.3 inches longer and 1.2 inches taller than the 2 Door, on a longer wheelbase, with a rear bench for three. Its 60:40 rear seat folds to take cargo space from 9.71 to 32.66 cubic feet. It has the same engines as the 2 Door, but no JCW version; Cooper S 4 Door buyers can add the JCW Style package instead.
The Convertible's power soft top opens fully in 18 seconds at up to 19 mph, and its front section slides back up to 16 inches like a sunroof at any speed. It is offered as a Cooper C, Cooper S and JCW.[3][35]
The electric Cooper SE (2020–2024)
The Cooper SE Hardtop 2 Door, sold for 2020–2024, was the electric Cooper; MINI USA's 2020 announcement called it the brand's first purely electrically powered vehicle. EPA rated its range at 110 miles for 2020 and 114 miles for 2024. MINI USA kept its MSRP at $29,900 before destination for three model years in a row through 2022.
Two recalls cover the Cooper SE's high-voltage battery: 24V-612 (a software update for 2020–2024 models) and 24V-302 (an inspection and leak test for battery housings that may not be sealed). Check both on any used Cooper SE.[14][16][15][36][37]
Buying a used MINI Cooper
On 2007–2012 Cooper S and JCW models, the main recalls involve the turbo's electric auxiliary coolant pump, whose circuit board can overheat (12V-008 and 18V-248). The other is 23V-337, for a driver's footwell control module that can corrode in road-salt states.
First-generation 2002–2006 cars have recalls for power steering assist (15V-660) and the passenger occupant detection mat (15V-205). Run any used Cooper's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for records showing the work was done.[38][39][40][41][42]
