BMW tools & data
By CarWhere Research · Updated
CarWhere’s BMW hub collects free tools for owners, shoppers and clubs: a BMW VIN decoder, specs for 329 US-market trims by chassis code, 41 engine codes, 91 known issues and recalls by generation, paint and option codes, and a printable car show window card. Each data page lists its sources, from BMW press kits to NHTSA recall records.
BMW people talk in codes. An E46 is a 1999–2006 3 Series, an N54 is the twin-turbo six in the 335i, and every car leaves the factory with a list of three-character option codes that defines it. These pages explain how to read those codes, what each generation of 18 model lines offered, and what to check on a particular chassis before you buy one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what options my BMW has?
A BMW’s factory options are recorded against its VIN as three-character option codes. A build sheet pulled from the VIN lists them with the original paint and upholstery codes, and the CarWhere BMW option code list explains what each code means.
Can I decode a BMW VIN for free?
Yes. The free CarWhere BMW VIN decoder returns the model year, model, body style, engine and assembly plant from the public NHTSA VIN database. Factory option codes and paint are not encoded in the VIN itself, so they need a build sheet.
What is my BMW’s chassis code?
The chassis code is BMW’s internal name for a generation and body, such as E46, F30 or G20. Match your model and year in the CarWhere BMW chassis codes table — a 2016 3 Series sedan, for example, is an F30.
Which BMW engines have the most known problems?
The best-documented issues include high-pressure fuel pumps and wastegates on the N54, oil consumption on early N63 V8s, rod bearing wear on the S54 and S85, and timing chain guides on the N20. The known-issues pages list each one by chassis and engine with sources.
What is a BMW car show window card?
A window card is a printed display sheet on the dash or windshield at car shows that tells spectators the car’s year, model, chassis code, color, notable options and history. The free CarWhere window card maker builds one from your details and prints it on a standard page.
