P0022: "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2)

P0022 means the Bank 2 "A" camshaft, usually the intake cam on the side opposite cylinder 1, is more retarded than the engine computer is commanding.

Severity: Moderate — diagnose within days
Can I drive with P0022? Short-term driving is usually possible, but low-speed power and idle quality may suffer. Check the oil level and avoid delaying repairs, as timing component wear can progress.

How P0022 sets

The powertrain control module (PCM) commands a Bank 2 intake cam angle through the variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid and checks the result using the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. When the measured cam angle stays later than the target by more than the allowed amount, or the phaser fails to lock in its base position, P0022 sets. Exact limits vary by manufacturer.

Common causes of P0022

Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.

  1. Low oil level or sludged oil
  2. Bank 2 VVT solenoid stuck in the retard position
  3. Bank 2 intake cam phaser worn or not locking
  4. Stretched timing chain or weak tensioner
  5. Restricted oil feed to the phaser
  6. Incorrect cam installation

P0022 symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start or rough idle
  • Weak low-speed acceleration
  • Increased fuel use
  • Possible ticking or rattling from the timing area

How P0022 is diagnosed

  1. Check oil level and quality
  2. Record freeze frame and look for P0021, P0018 or P0020
  3. Monitor desired versus actual Bank 2 cam angle in live data
  4. Command the Bank 2 solenoid with a scan tool and verify movement
  5. Inspect the solenoid and its screen
  6. Measure timing chain stretch and confirm timing marks

Typical fixes for P0022

  • Change oil and filter
  • Replace the Bank 2 "A" oil control solenoid
  • Replace the Bank 2 intake cam phaser
  • Replace the timing chain set if worn
  • Re-time the engine if marks are off

Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

Manufacturer notes

Reported on various V6 and V8 engines with oil-actuated cam phasers, including some GM and Toyota engines. Definitions can vary by manufacturer; check factory service information.

P0022 FAQ

What does code P0022 mean?

P0022 means the Bank 2 "A" camshaft, usually the intake cam on the side opposite cylinder 1, is more retarded than the engine computer is commanding. The standard definition is ""A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2)."

Can I drive with a P0022 code?

Short-term driving is usually possible, but low-speed power and idle quality may suffer. Check the oil level and avoid delaying repairs, as timing component wear can progress.

Is P0022 the Bank 2 version of P0012?

Yes. Both mean the "A" camshaft is over-retarded; P0012 applies to Bank 1 and P0022 applies to Bank 2.

Can P0022 go away after an oil change?

If low or contaminated oil caused it, yes. If the code returns after the oil is corrected, the solenoid, phaser or chain needs testing.
