P0522: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Low
P0522 means the engine oil pressure sensor or switch is sending a signal voltage below its normal range, which can indicate a sensor fault or genuinely low oil pressure.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P0522 sets
The powertrain control module (PCM) reads the oil pressure sensor signal. If the voltage stays below the minimum valid value for a set time, from a short to ground, a failed sensor, or an open reference circuit, it sets P0522. On some sensors a low voltage also corresponds to low pressure, so a true pressure loss must be ruled out. Limits vary by manufacturer.
Common causes of P0522
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Failed oil pressure sensor
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Open reference voltage circuit
- Oil-contaminated or corroded connector
- Genuinely low oil pressure
P0522 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Oil pressure gauge reading low or zero
- Oil pressure warning light
- Engine noise if pressure is truly low
How P0522 is diagnosed
- Check oil level and condition
- Verify actual pressure with a mechanical gauge
- Check for other sensor reference voltage codes
- Inspect the sensor and connector for oil contamination
- Verify reference voltage and ground at the sensor
- Check the signal wire for a short to ground
Typical fixes for P0522
- Replace the oil pressure sensor
- Repair shorted or open wiring
- Clean or replace the connector
- Repair engine oiling problems if pressure is low
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

P0522 FAQ
What does code P0522 mean?
P0522 means the engine oil pressure sensor or switch is sending a signal voltage below its normal range, which can indicate a sensor fault or genuinely low oil pressure. The standard definition is "Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Low."
Can I drive with a P0522 code?
Check the oil level before driving further. If the oil is low, the oil pressure light is on, or the engine ticks or knocks, stop driving. If oil level is correct and the engine sounds normal, drive only as necessary until real pressure is verified.
Is P0522 a sensor problem or an engine problem?
It is most often the sensor or wiring, but it can reflect real low pressure. A mechanical gauge test is the only way to be sure.
Why does my gauge read zero but the engine sounds fine?
That pattern often points to a failed sensor or wiring fault, but still verify with a mechanical gauge before continuing to drive.
