P0715: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit
P0715 means the transmission computer detected an electrical fault in the input or turbine speed sensor circuit, which reports how fast the transmission input shaft is turning.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P0715 sets
The input or turbine speed sensor reads the rotation of the transmission input shaft or torque converter turbine. The transmission control module (TCM) uses that signal, with engine and output speed, to time shifts and calculate slip. If the circuit is open, shorted or produces an electrically invalid signal, the TCM sets P0715. Sensor type and test limits are manufacturer-specific.
Common causes of P0715
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Failed input or turbine speed sensor
- Damaged sensor wiring or connector
- Metallic debris on a magnetic sensor tip
- Low or contaminated transmission fluid
- Damaged reluctor or tone ring
- TCM fault
P0715 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Harsh, delayed or no upshifts
- Transmission stuck in one gear (limp mode)
- Tachometer or speedometer irregular on some vehicles
- Reduced fuel economy
How P0715 is diagnosed
- Record freeze frame data and all transmission codes
- Check transmission fluid level and condition
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for damage and fluid intrusion
- Watch input speed live data while driving; it should track engine speed closely in gear
- Measure sensor resistance or signal output per factory procedure
- Remove the sensor and inspect for debris; check the reluctor if accessible
Typical fixes for P0715
- Replace the input or turbine speed sensor
- Repair wiring or connector faults
- Clean debris from the sensor and service the fluid
- Repair a damaged reluctor or internal component
- Replace or reprogram the TCM if faulty
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

P0715 FAQ
What does code P0715 mean?
P0715 means the transmission computer detected an electrical fault in the input or turbine speed sensor circuit, which reports how fast the transmission input shaft is turning. The standard definition is "Input/Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit."
Can I drive with a P0715 code?
Only gently and briefly. Without input speed, many transmissions shift harshly or go into limp mode, and continued driving can add clutch wear, so plan a repair soon.
What does the input speed sensor do?
It tells the transmission computer how fast the input shaft is spinning. Comparing that with output speed lets the computer confirm which gear is engaged and detect slipping.
Is the input speed sensor inside the transmission?
It depends on the design. Some are bolted into the case and easy to reach, while others are internal and require removing the pan or valve body.
