P0716: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance

P0716 means the transmission input or turbine speed sensor is producing a signal, but it is erratic, drops out, or does not make sense compared with engine and output speed.

Severity: High — limit driving
Can I drive with P0716? Limit driving to short, gentle trips. Erratic input speed data can cause harsh shifts, flare between gears or limp mode, and may also mask real internal slipping.

How P0716 sets

The transmission control module (TCM) compares the input speed signal with engine speed, output speed and the commanded gear. When the input reading jumps, drops intermittently, or falls outside the range the other signals predict, the TCM sets P0716. The comparison windows used are manufacturer-specific.

Common causes of P0716

Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.

  1. Intermittent or weak input speed sensor
  2. Loose connector or chafed wiring
  3. Electrical interference from poorly routed wiring
  4. Debris on the sensor tip or damaged tone ring
  5. Low fluid causing actual internal slippage
  6. Internal clutch or torque converter problems

P0716 symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Harsh or erratic shifting
  • Engine speed flare during shifts
  • Intermittent limp mode
  • Unstable tachometer on some vehicles

How P0716 is diagnosed

  1. Record freeze frame data and all transmission codes, noting any ratio codes
  2. Verify fluid level and condition
  3. Graph input speed against engine and output speed during a road test to spot dropouts
  4. Wiggle-test the wiring and connector while monitoring the signal
  5. Inspect the sensor for debris and check its air gap and mounting
  6. If the signal is clean but disagrees with other speeds, investigate internal slipping

Typical fixes for P0716

  • Replace the input speed sensor
  • Repair intermittent wiring or connectors
  • Clean the sensor and service the fluid and filter
  • Repair internal transmission faults if slipping is confirmed

Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

P0716 FAQ

What does code P0716 mean?

P0716 means the transmission input or turbine speed sensor is producing a signal, but it is erratic, drops out, or does not make sense compared with engine and output speed. The standard definition is "Input/Turbine Speed Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance."

Can I drive with a P0716 code?

Limit driving to short, gentle trips. Erratic input speed data can cause harsh shifts, flare between gears or limp mode, and may also mask real internal slipping.

Can low fluid cause P0716?

Yes. Low fluid can let clutches slip, so input speed no longer matches what the computer expects, and that can be flagged as a sensor performance fault.

How is P0716 different from P0715?

P0715 indicates an electrical circuit fault. P0716 means a signal exists but is unreliable or implausible, which can point to the sensor, wiring or the transmission itself.
