Porsche 992: History, Specs & What to Know
By CarWhere Research · Updated
The Porsche 992 is the eighth generation of the 911, revealed in Los Angeles on 27 November 2018 and on sale from the 2020 model year. It uses 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-sixes in the Carrera range. The 2025 992.2 update added the first hybrid 911, the 532 hp Carrera GTS T-Hybrid.
The 992 kept the 991.2's twin-turbocharged flat-six for the Carrera range. Over its first phase the line grew to include the Targa, Turbo and Turbo S, GTS, a GT3 with an optional Touring Package, the GT3 RS, the off-road Dakar, the S/T and the Sport Classic.
Porsche splits the generation into two phases. The 992.1 ran from the 2020 to 2024 model years; the 992.2, from 2025, brought the T-Hybrid system with an electric turbocharger to the Carrera GTS and later the Turbo S, and made the six-speed manual standard on the Carrera T.

992 engine and drivetrain facts
- Carrera, Carrera S and the 992.1 GTS share a 2,981 cc twin-turbocharged flat-six; output differs by turbo and tune.[11]
- The 992 introduced an eight-speed PDK (standard on the Turbo S); the 992.2 Carrera T is offered only with a six-speed manual.[2],[3]
- The 992.2 GTS T-Hybrid uses a single electrically assisted turbocharger on a 3.6-liter engine; the 992.2 Turbo S uses two electric turbochargers.[3],[11]
- The 911 Dakar raises ground clearance by 50 mm over a Carrera with sport suspension, with a lift system adding another 30 mm.[5]
What to check before you buy a 992
- Check open recalls by VIN. 992.1 cars were recalled for windshield and rear-window bonding (NHTSA 24V-155), and center-lock-wheel cars for wheel bolts (24V-809).[12]
- 992.1 vs 992.2: confirm the phase from the model year and VIN. The facelift changed engines, equipment and prices, and the build record shows which car you are looking at.
- Options carry real money on a 992: Sport Chrono, rear-axle steering, ceramic brakes, front-axle lift and Paint to Sample are common, and all appear on the factory build record.
- Limited editions — Sport Classic, S/T, Dakar, Spirit 70 — are numbered runs; confirm the model through the factory record rather than appearance packages.[4],[5],[6],[8]

992 market context
CarWhere tracks median asking prices for used 911s by model year from live dealer listings, compared with today's new-car median. The 2020–2025 model years are 992s; the median pools every trim from Carrera to GT3, so check the per-year sample before reading too much into one year. See Porsche 911 depreciation by model year.
How to verify a 992's factory options
A 992's options decide its value as much as its trim. The window sticker, if the seller has it, lists them; otherwise a build sheet pulled from the VIN shows the factory paint, interior and option codes, including Paint to Sample and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur items.
See exactly how this 992 left the factory.
The CarWhere build sheet decodes a US-market Porsche VIN into its factory record: paint, interior, option codes and equipment as built. $9.99, and the free availability check shows whether build data exists before you pay.
