Porsche Macan known issues by generation

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The gasoline Macan (95B) arrived for 2015 and got updates for 2019 and 2022. The all-electric Macan followed on a separate platform. Early cars have the longest list of known items, and the facelifted cars have a better record. CarWhere lists 8 documented Macan issues, including 4 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source.

Macan 95B.1 problems (2015–2018)

Transfer case judder (warranty extension) (2014–2018 model years (Porsche's numbering))

Moderate
Generation:
95B.1
Years:
2014–2018 model years (Porsche's numbering)
Engine:
All

Many early Macans developed a jerk or vibration when pulling away, often worse with the wheel turned. It was traced to the transfer case. Porsche's 2020 service bulletin extends transfer-case coverage to seven years from first delivery with no mileage cap, and the extension passes to later owners. Because it runs from delivery date, most cars are now at or past the end of it.

Symptoms

  • Jerking or shudder when accelerating from low speed
  • Vibration that gets worse with steering lock

Check before buying

  • Ask a Porsche dealer whether the transfer case was replaced and whether coverage remains
  • Test-drive slowly with the wheel turned

Fuel pump flange recalls (2015–2018)

Safety recall
Generation:
95B.1
Years:
2015–2018
Engine:
Gasoline

Two recalls address cracks at the fuel pump flange that can leak fuel. The first (2017) covered Macan S, Turbo and GTS models. The second (2020) widened to more 2015–2018 Macans, where the pump service cover could rub on the flange. Dealers inspect, rework or replace the flange and add a protective film.

Symptoms

  • Fuel smell inside or near the rear of the car

Check before buying

  • Confirm both 17V-289 and 20V-077 were completed where listed

Oil and coolant leaks on early V6 cars (2015–2018)

Moderate
Generation:
95B.1
Years:
2015–2018
Engine:
V6 twin-turbo (S, GTS, Turbo)

Some early V6 Macans leak oil from the timing cover seal. Fixing it at the factory standard meant dropping the engine, though independent shops now have cheaper methods. Turbo oil supply lines can leak too. PCA notes these leaks are costly on pre-2019 cars because of poor access.

Symptoms

  • Oil spots under the engine
  • Burning-oil smell
  • Check-engine light from a vacuum leak

Check before buying

  • Inspect the engine underside for fresh oil
  • Ask for records of timing cover or turbo line repairs

Driveshaft center bearing wear (2015–2018 (reported))

Minor
Generation:
95B
Years:
2015–2018 (reported)
Engine:
All

Like the Cayenne, some Macans develop clunks and vibration from the main driveshaft. Wear in the center support bearing or the rubber couplings is the usual cause.

Symptoms

  • Clunk on take-off
  • Vibration through the floor

Check before buying

  • Feel for vibration on the test drive
  • Ask whether the shaft or bearing was replaced

Infotainment (PCM) and electrical glitches (2015–2018)

Minor
Generation:
95B.1
Years:
2015–2018
Engine:
All

Owners of early Macans reported infotainment units that restart, switch off, or fail to load maps. A reset sometimes clears it, but a hardware fault means replacing the unit. PCA says 2019-and-later cars have a better record.

Symptoms

  • Screen rebooting or going blank
  • Navigation not loading

Check before buying

  • Use the infotainment for the whole test drive
  • Ask about software updates

Passenger seat occupancy sensor recall (2015–2018)

Safety recall
Generation:
95B.1
Years:
2015–2018
Engine:
All

The front passenger seat sensor mat can degrade and stop detecting a passenger. If that happens, the passenger airbag may not deploy in a crash. Nearly 40,000 U.S. Macans were included.

Symptoms

  • Passenger airbag-off light with an adult seated

Check before buying

  • Confirm the recall is closed

Porsche Macan Electric problems (2024–present)

Macan Electric rearview camera recall (2024–2025)

Safety recall
Generation:
Macan Electric
Years:
2024–2025
Engine:
Electric

On some early Macan Electrics, the rearview camera image may be blurry or not show at all. Dealers update software and replace the camera if needed.

Symptoms

  • Blank or blurry backup camera

Check before buying

  • Confirm recall ASA3 is closed
  • Test the camera when buying

NHTSA recall: 25V-220 (2025-04) · 8,571 vehicles

Macan Electric headlight brightness recall (2024–2025)

Safety recall
Generation:
Macan Electric
Years:
2024–2025
Engine:
Electric

Early Macan Electrics left the factory with headlight software that made the lights too bright for U.S. rules. That can dazzle oncoming drivers. Dealers reprogram the control unit for free.

Check before buying

  • Confirm recall ARC5 is closed

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Porsche Macan problems?

The best-documented Porsche Macan issues are transfer case judder (warranty extension) (95B.1, 2014–2018 model years) and oil and coolant leaks on early V6 cars (95B.1, 2015–2018). How much each matters depends on the generation and engine, so check the section for the exact car you are looking at.

Has the Porsche Macan had any safety recalls?

Yes. Recalls covered on this page include fuel pump flange recalls (NHTSA 20V-077), passenger seat occupancy sensor recall (NHTSA 21V-131), macan Electric rearview camera recall (NHTSA 25V-220) and macan Electric headlight brightness recall (NHTSA 24V-889). Recall repairs are free at a Porsche dealer; check any specific car’s VIN with NHTSA to see whether its recall work was completed.

What should I check before buying a used Porsche Macan?

Ask a Porsche dealer whether the transfer case was replaced and whether coverage remains. Inspect the engine underside for fresh oil. A pre-purchase inspection by a Porsche specialist covers these and pulls the service history.

Is the Porsche Macan reliable?

Most well-known Porsche Macan problems are tied to specific generations or engines rather than the model as a whole, and many have a known fix or retrofit.
