8HP (TorqueFlite 8): years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 8HP70 is the ZF-designed eight-speed automatic Stellantis sells as the TorqueFlite 8. It arrived behind the HEMI V8 in the 2013 Ram 1500 with about 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of input capacity, became the upgraded 8HP75 in the 2019 Ram 1500, and the heavier 8HP90 and 8HP95 back supercharged Hellcat and TRX engines.

ZF's 8HP eight-speed came to Chrysler's trucks with the 2013 Ram 1500, marketed as TorqueFlite 8: the lighter 8HP45 with the Pentastar V6 and the higher-capacity 8HP70 with the 5.7 HEMI from early 2013. The number in each name indicates nominal torque capacity in newton-meters, so the 8HP70 is rated around 700 Nm. For the 2019 Ram 1500 the HEMI moved to an upgraded 8HP75, with sixth gear direct and seventh and eighth as overdrives.

The heavier 8HP90 backs the supercharged 6.2 HEMI in SRT Hellcat models, and the 2021–2024 Ram 1500 TRX used the high-capacity 8HP95. Ram's 6.4 HEMI heavy-duty trucks also use an eight-speed. The most commonly reported wear item on hard-driven 8HPs is the torque converter lock-up clutch.

8HP (TorqueFlite 8) problems and what to check

Torque converter lock-up clutch wear under hard use (2013–present)

Minor

On hard-driven or power-modified vehicles, the 8HP's torque converter lock-up clutch is the most commonly reported wear item, along with seal and bushing wear. It is far less common on stock vehicles driven normally.[1]

Symptoms

  • Shudder at light throttle while cruising
  • Flare or slip on upshifts
  • Transmission fault codes or limp mode

Check before buying

  • Feel for shudder during gentle cruising
  • Ask about tuning and fluid service history
  • Scan for stored transmission codes

Frequently asked questions

Is the TorqueFlite 8 a ZF transmission?

Yes. TorqueFlite 8 is Stellantis' name for the ZF 8HP eight-speed design; Ram introduced it in the 2013 Ram 1500.

What is the difference between the 8HP70 and 8HP75?

The 8HP75 is an upgraded, higher-capacity version that replaced the 8HP70 behind the HEMI in the 2019 Ram 1500. The number reflects nominal torque capacity in newton-meters.

How much torque can an 8HP70 handle?

Its nominal rating is about 700 Nm, or roughly 516 lb-ft, which is why supercharged models use the larger 8HP90 or 8HP95.

Which transmission is in the Ram TRX?

The 2021–2024 Ram 1500 TRX used the high-capacity TorqueFlite 8HP95 eight-speed behind its 702-hp supercharged 6.2 HEMI.

Does the 8HP have a recall?

We did not find an 8HP-specific NHTSA recall in the records reviewed for this page; run a VIN check on NHTSA for any individual vehicle.
