Jetta GLI: the sport sedan, then and now
The GLI dates to the first Jetta, when VW offered a version with the Golf GTI engine and more comfort equipment. EPA first lists a Jetta GLI for 1986, then a GLI 16V from 1987 to 1992 whose engine grew from 1.8L to 2.0L for 1990.
The 2027 GLI is a single Autobahn trim at $33,795. It has a 228-hp, 258 lb-ft 2.0L turbo, a 7-speed DSG, DCC adaptive dampers with Adaptive Chassis Control, dynamic steering and ventilated leather seats. EPA lists no manual GLI for 2027; the 2026 GLI was the last with a 6-speed manual.[7][11][12][1][5][6][34]
The 2027 Jetta lineup
Four Jetta trims are offered for 2027: S ($23,995), Sport ($25,395), SE ($26,995) and SEL ($29,995). All use a 158-hp, 184 lb-ft 1.5L turbo four, an 8-speed automatic and front-wheel drive.
The S has an 8-inch Digital Cockpit and keyless start. The Sport adds the XDS Cross Differential System, a grille light bar, 17-inch wheels and heated front seats. The SE adds remote start and wireless charging; the SEL brings ventilated leather seats, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro and VW Premium Audio.[1][2][3]
Which Jettas have a manual transmission?
The seventh-generation Jetta launched with a 6-speed manual as standard. EPA lists a manual Jetta every year from 2019 through 2024; from 2025 only the 8-speed automatic is listed.
The GLI kept a 6-speed manual longer: EPA lists it through the 2026 model year, rated 26/36/29 mpg.[8][30][35][36][34][9][23][27]
Jetta history in numbers
VW says 17.5 million Jettas had been produced worldwide by January 2018, about 3.2 million of them sold in the US, making it the most successful car with German roots in the US. The car has carried other names: Vento and Bora in Europe and Sagitar in China.
EPA rated the first seventh-generation Jetta (2019, 1.4L automatic) at 30/40/34 mpg; the 2027 Jetta S with the 1.5L is rated 29/40/34.[8][37][3]
Volkswagen Jetta generations by year
| Generation | US model years | Engines | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jetta IType 16 | 1979–1984 | 1.7L and 1.8L gas fours; 1.6L diesel and turbodiesel (US engines per EPA, 1984) | Unveiled in July 1979 as a notchback built on Golf I technology, about 40 cm longer with a 520-liter trunk. A GLI version used the Golf GTI engine. VW says 2.3 million first-generation Jettas were sold. EPA records begin with 1984, so earlier US model years are not covered here.[7][8][9] |
| Jetta II16E/19E | 1984–1992 | 1.8L gas four (8-valve, and 16-valve in the GLI 16V, which grew to 2.0L for 1990–1992); 1.6L diesel and turbodiesel | Unveiled in February 1984 and developed alongside the Golf II. VW added ABS, a 16-valve GT and the syncro all-wheel-drive model during the run. VW says 2.7 million were sold worldwide.[10][8][11][12][13] |
| Jetta III (Vento in Europe) | 1993–1999 | 2.0L four; 2.8L VR6 V6 (GLX); 1.9L turbodiesel from 1996 | Revealed in January 1992 and sold in Europe as the Vento, while the US kept the Jetta name; EPA lists it as the Jetta III for 1993–1995. It was based on the Golf III. A carry-over Jetta was still listed for 1999 alongside the new model.[14][8][15][16][17] |
| Jetta IV (Bora in Europe)1J5 / 1JM | 1999–2005 | 2.0L four, 1.8L turbo four (from 2000), 2.8L VR6 V6, 1.9L TDI diesel | Launched in 1998 on the Golf IV and called the Bora in Europe. EPA lists it as the "New Jetta" for 1999, and its wagon was sold in the US as the Jetta Wagon (2001–2005). VW says 4.6 million were built, the best-selling Jetta generation as of 2018.[18][8][17][19] |
| Jetta V | 2005–2010 | 2.5L five-cylinder, 2.0L turbo four, 1.9L TDI (to 2006) and 2.0L TDI (2009–2010) diesels | Introduced in November 2004; EPA lists the new 2.5L five-cylinder alongside older engines for 2005. The Jetta SportWagen joined for 2008. VW says about three million were sold.[8][20][21][22][23] |
| Jetta VI | 2011–2018 | 2.0L and 2.5L gas fours/fives, 2.0L TDI (to 2015), 1.8L and 1.4L turbo fours, 2.0L turbo (GLI); 1.4L turbo hybrid (2013–2016) | Premiered in 2010 as the first Jetta designed separately from the Golf. VW says it sold 3.7 million units. EPA lists a Jetta Hybrid for 2013–2016 and the 2.0L TDI through 2015.[8][24][25][26][27][28] |
| Jetta VII | 2019–present | 1.4L turbo four (2019–2021), 1.5L turbo four (2022–), 2.0L turbo four (GLI) | Revealed in Detroit in January 2018 as the first Jetta on the MQB platform, designed mainly for North America, with a 6-speed manual standard and an 8-speed automatic optional at launch. US sales began in the second quarter of 2018. Built in Puebla, Mexico.[8][29][30][31][32][33] |
Volkswagen Jetta problems and recalls
The best-documented Volkswagen Jetta problem is the 2009–2015 2.0L TDI diesel emissions case: EPA found defeat-device software, and VW offered buybacks or an approved emissions fix. Gas Jettas have recalls for fuel leaks (2006–2010 2.5L models, 2016–2018 fuel rail bolts), a 2011–2014 air bag clock spring, and DSG gearbox faults on the 2013–2015 Jetta Hybrid.
