Volkswagen Jetta problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The best-documented Volkswagen Jetta problem is the 2009–2015 2.0L TDI diesel emissions case: EPA found defeat-device software, and VW offered buybacks or an approved emissions fix. Gas Jettas have recalls for fuel leaks (2006–2010 2.5L models, 2016–2018 fuel rail bolts), a 2011–2014 air bag clock spring, and DSG gearbox faults on the 2013–2015 Jetta Hybrid.

CarWhere lists 27 documented Jetta issues, including 26 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source. Recall entries come from NHTSA's recall dataset on the DOT open-data portal, which may not list every campaign, so run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

Jetta, fifth generation Jetta problems (2006–2010)

2.0L TDI diesel emissions defeat device (EPA settlement) (2009–2015)

Major repair
Generation:
Jetta, fifth generation and sixth generation TDI (2009–2015)
Years:
2009–2015
Powertrain:
2.0L TDI diesel

EPA lists the 2009–2015 Jetta and 2009–2014 Jetta SportWagen among 2.0L TDI diesels sold with software that cut emissions controls in normal driving. Under the 2016 court-approved settlement, VW offered buybacks, lease terminations and, once EPA and CARB approved it in 2017, an emissions modification. Modified cars get an extended warranty on the emissions control system.

Symptoms

  • No drivability symptom; the issue is emissions software
  • Possible changes to fuel economy or maintenance after the fix, which VW had to disclose

Check before buying

  • Ask for paperwork showing the EPA- and CARB-approved emissions modification was performed
  • Check the history for a settlement buyback; EPA says bought-back cars could be resold only after the approved fix

This page explains specific mechanical issues and recalls. Which model years drew the most owner complaints relative to the rest of the model’s history is answered in the years-to-avoid research where CarWhere publishes it.

Confirm how a Jetta was built before you buy.

Engine, transmission and packages decide which of these issues apply. The CarWhere Volkswagen build sheet reconstructs factory colors, options and packages from licensed VIN-level build data — availability is checked free, and it is $9.99 only when detailed build data is found for that VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Which Jetta TDI years were part of the diesel emissions settlement?

EPA lists the 2009–2015 Jetta and 2009–2014 Jetta SportWagen with the 2.0L TDI among vehicles sold with defeat devices. Owners could choose a buyback, a lease termination or, after EPA and CARB approved it in 2017, an emissions modification that comes with an extended emissions warranty.

Is a used Jetta TDI safe to buy after the fix?

EPA says any vehicle bought back under the settlement could be resold only after an approved emissions modification. Ask for paperwork showing the modification was done. TDI Jettas from 2009–2012 also had recall 11V490 for a fuel injector line that could crack and leak diesel.

Did the Jetta Hybrid have DSG transmission recalls?

Yes. Recall 13V568 replaced gearbox oil that could corrode the DQ200 7-speed DSG's control module on 2013–2014 Jetta Hybrids, and 19V866 fixed mechatronic units that could crack and leak on 2013–2015 models, which could cause a loss of drive power.

Which Jetta recalls involve fuel leaks?

Recall 10V621 covers 2006–2010 Jettas with the 2.5L engine, where a washer reservoir tab can chafe the fuel line. Recall 15V028 covers fuel rail caps on 2014–2015 models, 20V648 covers fuel rail bolts that can loosen on 2016–2018 models (218,192 units), and 24V110 covers fuel tank suction pumps on 2019–2020 Jetta GLIs.

Is there an exploding air bag inflator recall for the Jetta?

Recall 18V406 covers driver air bag inflators that may explode on certain 2003 Jettas and other 2003 VWs, which predate the generations on this page. For 2006-and-later Jettas, the main air bag campaign is 15V483, which fixes clock springs that can disconnect the driver's air bag on 2011–2014 models.

What recalls affect the current Jetta?

The seventh-generation Jetta (2019 onward) has recalls for rear coil springs and ignition switches on 2019 models, rear camera software on 2021–2022 models, instrument panel failures on 2025 models (26V185) and a loose transmission ground wire with a fire risk on 2025–2026 models (26V138).
