Volvo XC40 engines, horsepower and mpg

EPA lists both a front-drive B4 and an all-wheel-drive B5 for 2026; Volvo's 2025 price list shows only the B5 AWD. Volvo does not give B4/B5 output in the releases we could retrieve. Before the mild hybrids, the XC40 used Drive-E T4 (front drive) and T5 (all-wheel drive) turbo fours.

XC40 engines: T4 and T5 to B4 and B5

At launch the XC40 used Volvo's 2.0-liter Drive-E turbo four as the all-wheel-drive T5, with a front-drive T4 added in summer 2018. EPA lists both with an 8-speed automatic.

For the 2023 model year Volvo moved the XC40 to mild-hybrid powertrains badged B4 and B5. EPA rates the 2019 T5 AWD at 23/31/26 mpg and the 2026 B5 AWD at 23/30/26.[5][4][7][9][2]

XC40 Recharge and the EX40 name

The electric XC40 Recharge P8 arrived for 2021 at $53,990 with 402 hp, 486 lb-ft and a 78 kWh battery. For 2024 Volvo added a rear-drive Single Motor Extended Range version (248 hp, 82 kWh, 293 miles EPA) and reworked the Twin Motor (254 miles).

For 2025 Volvo renamed the electric version EX40; the XC40 name stays on the mild hybrids.

Black Edition styling became available on the XC40 for 2026.[5][13][4][14][1][15]
