BMW X7 known issues by generation

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The X7 arrived for 2019 as BMW's three-row flagship SUV and shares its platform and most hardware with the G05 X5. Its record so far is made up of recalls, mostly shared with the X5, rather than long-term mechanical patterns. 6 documented issues, 6 with NHTSA recall numbers.

CarWhere lists 6 documented X7 issues, including 6 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, engines, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source.

B58 3.0L turbo inline-6; N63 4.4L V8

Early 2020 X7s share a steering-rack recall with the X5. The pinion teeth can break under load and cause loss of steering control. Dealers replace the steering rack free of charge.

Symptoms

  • Clunk or free play in the steering
  • Steering warning

Starter motor can overheat after repeated start attempts (2019–2020)

Safety recall
Chassis:

Years:
2019–2020
Engine:
B58 3.0L turbo inline-6; N63 4.4L V8

If the starter motor on a 2019–2020 X7 fails, repeated attempts to start the car can overload and overheat it, which could ignite nearby material. BMW first addressed this with a software update in 2024, then in 2025 (25V-644) called the same cars back for a new starter, including those already updated. Dealers do the work for free.

Symptoms

  • No-start or repeated cranking
  • Burning smell near the starter

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common BMW X7 problems?

The best-documented BMW X7 issues are steering rack pinion teeth may break (G07 X7 xDrive40i and M50i, 2020), wheel bolts may be under-tightened (early 2019 builds) (G07 X7 xDrive40i, 2019), front axle support weld may separate (G07 X7 xDrive40i and M50i, 2020) and starter motor can overheat after repeated start attempts (G07 X7, 2019–2020). How much each matters depends on the chassis code and engine, so check the section for the exact car you are looking at.

Has the BMW X7 had any safety recalls?

Yes. Recalls covered on this page include steering rack pinion teeth may break (NHTSA 19V-631), wheel bolts may be under-tightened (early 2019 builds) (NHTSA 19V-541), front axle support weld may separate (NHTSA 20V-678) and starter motor can overheat after repeated start attempts (NHTSA 24V-576). Recall repairs are free at a BMW dealer; check any specific car’s VIN with NHTSA to see whether its recall work was completed.

What should I check before buying a used BMW X7?

Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a BMW dealer to confirm the recall work was completed. A pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist covers these and pulls the service history.

Is the BMW X7 reliable?

The documented BMW X7 issues are recall campaigns rather than recurring wear-out failures, and recall repairs are done free by BMW dealers. On a used car, the key step is confirming every open recall has been completed for that VIN.
