Frequently asked questions
What do BMW chassis codes like E46, F30 and G20 mean?
They are BMW’s internal development codes for each generation and body. E codes cover cars developed up to the late 2000s, F codes the 2010s and G codes the current generation; electric and newer models use I and U codes. The E46, for example, is the 1999–2006 3 Series and the G20 is the 3 Series sold since 2019.
What is the most powerful BMW?
Of the 329 US-market trims in this dataset, the most powerful is the BMW M5 Sedan (G90) at 717 hp.
What is the quickest BMW from 0 to 60 mph?
The quickest BMW-claimed 0–60 mph time in this dataset is 2.9 seconds, for the BMW M5 CS Sedan (F90).
How do I find out which generation my BMW is?
Match the model year to the generation tables on each model page — a 2015 3 Series sedan, for example, is an F30. The free CarWhere BMW VIN decoder confirms the model, year, body and engine, and the chassis code is also printed on the build sheet.
Are these BMW specs for US-market cars?
Yes. Horsepower and torque are US ratings, MSRPs are US base prices at launch excluding destination, and only trims BMW of North America sold are listed. European-only engines and body styles are left out or noted.
How do I see how a specific BMW was optioned?
Specs describe a trim; a car's actual equipment is recorded against its VIN. A build sheet decoded from the VIN lists the factory option codes, original paint and upholstery for that individual car.
Sources and method
Each model page lists its sources per chassis code: BMW Group PressClub USA press kits, technical specifications and price releases and bmwusa.com first, then instrumented tests and reviews from Car and Driver, MotorTrend and similar outlets where BMW did not publish a US figure. Values we could not confirm are left blank rather than estimated. 113 trims were re-checked against a second independent source.
