Dodge Challenger Hellcat history: 2015–2023

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat launched for 2015 with a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi rated at 707 hp — then the most powerful muscle car ever. It grew to 717 hp for 2019 and spawned the 797 hp Redeye, 807 hp Super Stock and the Demons before production ended at Brampton in December 2023.

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat history

The modern Challenger arrived for 2008 as a retro-styled coupe built in Brampton, Ontario. In July 2014 Dodge announced its most extreme version yet: the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat, whose supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 was rated at 707 hp and 650 lb-ft, the most powerful V8 Chrysler had produced. A black key fob limited output to 500 hp; the red fob unlocked all of it.

Dodge kept raising the stakes. The standard Hellcat went to 717 hp for 2019, the same year the Demon-derived Hellcat Redeye arrived with 797 hp, and the drag-oriented Super Stock followed for 2020 at 807 hp. Widebody versions became a signature look.

The Hemi Challenger ended with the 2023 model year. The last car, a Demon 170, was built on December 22, 2023; across 2008–2023 the third-generation Challenger sold 806,925 units worldwide, according to secondary sources.[1],[2],[3],[4]

What to check before you buy one

  • Verify the exact variant — Hellcat, Redeye, Super Stock, Widebody — from the VIN and paperwork rather than badges or hood scoops.
  • Ask about modifications (pulley, tune, exhaust) and drag-strip use, and inspect tires, brakes and the rear axle area.
  • Look for service records on the supercharged engine and the transmission (6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic).
  • The factory build sheet confirms Widebody, Redeye, Jailbreak and option-group equipment on the specific car.
