2.7 EcoBoost: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 2.7 EcoBoost “Nano” is a compact twin-turbo V6 launched in the 2015 F-150 and later used in the Edge, Fusion Sport, Bronco and 2024+ Ranger. The F-150 version makes 325 hp. The one thing to know: 2021–2022 engines were recalled for intake valves that can break, and 2015–2017 trucks have an oil pan leak bulletin.

The 2.7 EcoBoost debuted for the 2015 F-150 as a smaller, lighter alternative to the 3.5 EcoBoost. Its block pairs a compacted graphite iron upper section with an aluminum lower section, and it uses twin turbochargers with direct injection; it is built at Ford’s Lima, Ohio engine plant.

The second generation arrived for the 2018 F-150 with port fuel injection added to the direct injectors and a 400 lb-ft rating. Transverse versions power the Edge Sport/ST and Fusion Sport, and the longitudinal engine is in the Bronco and the 2024+ Ranger.

Gen 1 2.7 EcoBoost (2015–2017 F-150) problems and what to check

Oil pan RTV seal leak (2015–2017)

Moderate

Ford bulletin 19-2205 says some 2015–2017 F-150s with the 2.7L may leak oil from the oil pan’s RTV sealant joint because of poor adhesion. The repair is a replacement oil pan with careful surface preparation; later bulletins superseded it with a later-style pan.[3]

Symptoms

  • Oil seeping from the oil pan joint
  • Drips under the engine or oil-soaked splash shield

Check before buying

  • Inspect the oil pan sealing line from below for wetness
  • Ask whether the oil pan was replaced and under which bulletin

Adds port fuel injection to the direct injectors and raises F-150 torque to 400 lb-ft. Used in the F-150, Bronco and 2024+ Ranger.

Gen 2 2.7 EcoBoost (2018+) problems and what to check

Intake valves can break (2021–2022) (2021–2022)

Major repair

Ford recalled certain 2021–2022 Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer and Lincoln models with 2.7L or 3.0L Nano EcoBoost engines because intake valves may break while driving. A broken valve can cause engine failure and a loss of drive power.[7]

Symptoms

  • Sudden misfire, rough running or loss of power
  • Check-engine light with misfire codes

Check before buying

  • Run the VIN for recall 24V-635 and confirm the remedy was completed
  • Ask for service records of any engine repair or replacement

Frequently asked questions

What are the problems with the 2.7 EcoBoost?

The best-documented items are oil pan leaks on 2015–2017 F-150s, covered by Ford bulletin 19-2205, and the 2024 recall for intake valves that can break on certain 2021–2022 engines. Check the VIN for recall 24V-635.

How much horsepower does the 2.7 EcoBoost have?

In the F-150 it is rated at 325 hp, with 375 lb-ft for 2015–2017 and 400 lb-ft from 2018. The Bronco version makes 330 hp and 415 lb-ft on premium fuel, and the 2024+ Ranger version makes 315 hp.

Is the 2.7 EcoBoost better than the 3.5?

The 2.7 is lighter and often more efficient, while the 3.5 makes more power and torque and supports higher F-150 tow ratings. The 2.7 has fewer widely reported timing issues, but confirm recall and bulletin work for either engine.

What is the difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 2.7 EcoBoost?

Gen 2, from the 2018 F-150, adds port fuel injection to the direct injectors and raises torque from 375 to 400 lb-ft. Gen 1 (2015–2017) is direct-injection only.
