Ford Bronco Raptor history, specs and what to check before buying

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Ford Bronco Raptor, revealed in January 2022, is the most powerful street-legal Bronco Ford has built. Its twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 makes 418 hp and 440 lb-ft, and it rides on standard 37-inch tires, FOX Live Valve shocks and a track 9.8 inches wider than a base Bronco.

Ford Bronco Raptor history

Ford introduced the Bronco Raptor in January 2022 as a 2022 model, describing it as the first SUV inspired by Ultra4 racing, the mix of desert running and rock crawling seen at King of the Hammers. It was the first Bronco to wear the Raptor name.

The changes over a regular four-door Bronco are structural: a boxed steel frame, a Dana 44 AdvanTEK front axle, the Raptor-only HOSS 4.0 suspension with FOX Live Valve 3.1 internal-bypass dampers, and a track that Ford says is 9.8 inches wider than a base Bronco to clear the standard 37-inch tires.

Power comes from a twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, rated at 418 hp and 440 lb-ft on premium fuel and paired with a 10-speed automatic. Ford Racing has since campaigned the truck, including a stock mid-size class win at the 2025 Baja 1000 and a run of stock-class wins at King of the Hammers.[1],[2],[3],[6],[7]

What to check before you buy one

  • Confirm it is a genuine Bronco Raptor rather than a dressed-up four-door: look for the 3.0L EcoBoost, the 37-inch tires, the wide fender flares, and a Raptor window sticker or build record.
  • Ask whether the Ford Performance calibration has been installed and keep the documentation.
  • Inspect the FOX Live Valve shocks, front axle and steering components, and the skid plates for signs of hard rock-crawling or jumping.
  • Check tire wear and size; replacement 37 x 12.5R17 tires are a meaningful running cost.
  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup (nhtsa.gov/recalls) and ask a Ford dealer to confirm open campaigns and software updates have been completed.

How to verify a Ford Bronco Raptor's factory options

Bronco Raptors share most hardware as standard, so option choices such as the forged or beadlock-capable wheels and the interior and technology packages are what separate one from another. A factory build record lists them exactly.
