The Ford F-150 Raptor, generation by generation
By CarWhere Research · Updated
The Ford F-150 Raptor is Ford's factory desert-running pickup. A prototype was shown at the 2008 SEMA show, and the SVT Raptor launched for 2010 with a 5.4-liter V8, then an optional 411 hp 6.2. Since 2017 it has used a 450 hp high-output 3.5 EcoBoost V6, and the Raptor R adds a 720 hp supercharged 5.2 V8.
Ford F-150 Raptor history
The Raptor began with a small group of Ford Racing engineers in the mid-2000s who asked whether the capability of a Baja desert race truck could be sold with a factory warranty. A 2008 prototype was shown at the SEMA show, and Ford partnered with Fox to put position-sensitive internal-bypass shocks, until then a race-truck technology, on a production pickup.
The F-150 SVT Raptor, developed under Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) badge, went on sale in August 2009 as a 2010 model with a 320 hp 5.4-liter V8. Ford reported more than 3,000 orders before the optional 6.2-liter V8, rated at 411 hp and 434 lb-ft, arrived. SVT was later folded into Ford Performance, and the second-generation truck dropped the SVT prefix.
The 2017 Raptor, revealed at the 2015 Detroit auto show, swapped V8 power for a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and a 10-speed automatic and moved to an aluminum-alloy body that took about 500 pounds out of the truck. The third generation of 2021 added a five-link coil rear suspension, FOX Live Valve shocks and the first factory 37-inch tire option, and the V8 returned in the 2023 Raptor R.[1],[2],[3],[5],[6],[10]

Engine and drivetrain facts
- Ford's 2024 spec sheet lists the Raptor's high-output 3.5L EcoBoost as a twin-turbocharged, intercooled 60-degree V6 with aluminum block and heads, built in Cleveland, Ohio, and rated on premium fuel.
- The Raptor R's 5.2L supercharged V8 uses a cast-aluminum block with plasma-transfer-wire-arc cylinder liners and forged pistons, is built in Dearborn, and holds 11.5 quarts of oil versus 6 quarts in the V6.
- Both current Raptors use a 10-speed automatic, a two-speed transfer case with a 2.64:1 low range, and 4.10 axles with an electronic locking rear differential.
- The first-generation 6.2L V8 was rated at 411 hp and 434 lb-ft; the high-output 3.5L EcoBoost that replaced it for 2017 out-produced it in both power and torque.
What changed, generation by generation
- 2008Raptor prototype shown at the SEMA show; a Ford Racing development truck finished the 2008 Baja 1000.
- 2010 model yearF-150 SVT Raptor launches with a 320 hp 5.4L V8; the 411 hp 6.2L V8 can be ordered from December 1, 2009.
- 2017Second generation: high-output 3.5L EcoBoost (450 hp), 10-speed automatic, aluminum-alloy body about 500 lb lighter, FOX internal-bypass shocks; the SVT name is dropped.
- 2021Third generation: five-link coil rear with Panhard rod, FOX Live Valve shocks, and a factory 37-inch tire option, the largest fitted to a production light-duty full-size pickup.
- 2023Raptor R arrives with a 700 hp supercharged 5.2L V8 and standard 37-inch tires; production started late 2022 at Dearborn Truck Plant.
- 2024Raptor R rises to 720 hp; the standard Raptor stays at 450 hp.
What to check before you buy one
- Confirm the generation and engine: a 2010 truck may have the 5.4L or the 6.2L V8, 2017-on Raptors use the high-output 3.5L EcoBoost, and only the Raptor R has the supercharged 5.2L.
- Check whether a Gen 3 truck has the 35-inch or 37-inch tire setup; Ford lists slightly less suspension travel with the 37s (13.0 in front / 14.1 in rear versus 14.0 / 15.0).
- Look for evidence of hard off-road use: inspect the shocks for leaks, the control arms and skid plates, and the frame for bends or fresh welds.
- Ask about power upgrades or tunes and get the paperwork for any installed parts.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup (nhtsa.gov/recalls) and ask a Ford dealer to confirm open campaigns and software updates have been completed.
- Ask for the original window sticker or factory build record to confirm the tire package and other Raptor-specific options.

Ford F-150 Raptor prices and values
Launch pricing (Ford release, Nov. 3, 2009): the 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor with the 6.2L V8 was priced at $41,995 including destination; the 50-unit FR Raptor XT race truck was $99,950.[2]
How to verify a Ford F-150 Raptor's factory options
Raptors share their VIN structure with other F-150s, so the factory build record is the clearest proof of which engine, tire package and Raptor options a truck was built with. That matters most when telling a 6.2L Gen 1 from a 5.4L truck, or a factory 37-inch Gen 3 from one wearing aftermarket tires.
