Ford Lightning history: two SVT trucks and an electric F-150
By CarWhere Research · Updated
Ford has used the Lightning name on three trucks. SVT built a 240 hp 5.8-liter F-150 Lightning for 1993–1995 and a supercharged 5.4-liter version for 1999–2004 that reached 380 hp. The electric F-150 Lightning entered production in April 2022 with up to 580 hp; Ford ended it in 2025 and plans an extended-range successor.
Ford Lightning history
The first Lightning came from Ford's then-new Special Vehicle Team (SVT). Sold for 1993 to 1995, it put a 240 hp, 340 lb-ft 5.8-liter V8 into an F-150 with lowered suspension, a 4.10 rear axle and 17-inch wheels, and just over 11,000 were built.
After a three-year gap, the second SVT Lightning arrived for 1999 with a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 rated at 360 hp and 440 lb-ft. Output rose to 380 hp for 2001, when the truck could reach about 147 mph, and production ended after the 2004 model year.
Ford revived the name for its first full-size electric pickup. The F-150 Lightning went into production at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn on April 26, 2022, starting under $40,000 before tax credits and backed by 200,000 reservations. Ford paused its assembly in 2025, and on December 15, 2025 said production of the current generation had concluded, with the next Lightning to become an extended-range electric vehicle.[1],[2],[3],[4],[7],[8],[10]

Engine and drivetrain facts
- The 1999–2004 SVT Lightning used a 5.4L SOHC Triton V8 with an Eaton supercharger, rated at 360 hp at launch and 380 hp from 2001.
- Every F-150 Lightning EV uses two inboard motors for four-wheel drive and is rated at 775 lb-ft of torque regardless of battery.
- Ford's 2025 spec sheet lists three batteries, 98, 123 and 131 kWh usable, with EPA-estimated range of 240, 300 and up to 320 miles.
- Ford says its next-generation Lightning will be an extended-range EV in which electric motors always drive the wheels and a gas generator extends estimated range to more than 700 miles.
What changed, generation by generation
- 1993SVT launches the F-150 Lightning with a 240 hp 5.8L V8.

- 1999Second SVT Lightning: supercharged 5.4L V8, 360 hp.
- 2001Output rises to 380 hp and 450 lb-ft.
- 2004Final SVT Lightning model year; about 28,000 second-generation trucks were built.
- April 2022Battery-electric F-150 Lightning enters production at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center with 98 kWh and 131 kWh batteries.
- 2024Lightning Flash adds a 123 kWh battery option.
- October 2025Ford says Lightning assembly will remain paused while it prioritizes gas and hybrid F-Series trucks.
- December 15, 2025Ford says production of the current Lightning has concluded; the next generation will be an extended-range EV built at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, with timing to be announced.
What to check before you buy one
- For an SVT Lightning, confirm it is genuine and not a converted F-150: check the engine (5.8L or supercharged 5.4L), the SVT badging and interior, and the original window sticker or build record.
- On a 1999–2004 truck, ask about supercharger pulley, tuning and drivetrain modifications; they change both value and durability.
- For an F-150 Lightning EV, confirm which battery it has (98, 123 or 131 kWh); range, charging and towing depend on it.
- Ask a Ford dealer for a battery health check and confirm the truck has had its software updates.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup (nhtsa.gov/recalls) and ask a Ford dealer to confirm open campaigns and software updates have been completed.

Launch pricing (Ford, April 2022): the 2022 F-150 Lightning started under $40,000 before available tax credits.[4]
How to verify a Ford Lightning's factory options
On an F-150 Lightning, battery size is the most important factory option: it sets range, towing and charging capability, and it can't be seen from outside. The factory build record confirms the battery, trim and packages a truck was built with.
