6.2 Boss V8: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 6.2 Boss is Ford’s naturally aspirated SOHC two-valve V8, built from 2010 to 2022. It powered the 2010–2014 F-150 SVT Raptor and upper F-150 trims at 411 hp, and the 2011–2022 F-250/F-350 Super Duty at 385 hp. The one thing to know: Super Duty trucks moved to the 7.3L gas V8 later.

Ford developed the 6.2 Boss as a large-displacement gas V8 for trucks. It uses a cast-iron deep-skirt block with cross-bolted main caps and aluminum heads with a single overhead cam, two valves per cylinder and two spark plugs per cylinder. It was built at the Romeo Engine Plant in Michigan.

In the F-150 it was the premium engine from 2011 to 2014 and the only engine in the 2010–2014 SVT Raptor. In the Super Duty it served as the gas upgrade from 2011 through 2022, receiving a torque increase for 2017.

Frequently asked questions

What trucks have the 6.2 Boss V8?

The 2010–2014 F-150 SVT Raptor, upper-trim 2011–2014 F-150s, and 2011–2022 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups. Super Duty trucks later switched to the 7.3L gas V8.

How much horsepower does the Ford 6.2 have?

The F-150 and SVT Raptor version is rated at 411 hp and 434 lb-ft. The Super Duty version makes 385 hp, with 405 lb-ft through 2016 and 430 lb-ft from 2017.

Is the Ford 6.2 V8 reliable?

The 6.2 has no engine-specific NHTSA recall in the data we checked; its F-150 recalls involve transmission software. As with any high-mileage work truck, service history and towing use matter more than the engine choice.

Is the 6.2 Boss a pushrod engine?

No. It uses a single overhead cam per bank with two valves and two spark plugs per cylinder, unlike Ford’s later 7.3L gas V8, which is a pushrod design.
