Safety recall
Generation:

Years:
2019–2024
Engine:
Trucks with a factory engine block heater

Ford recalled 2019–2024 Rangers and many other models with a factory engine block heater because the heater can crack, leak coolant and short circuit when plugged in, creating a fire risk. Owners were told not to use the block heater until it is replaced.

Symptoms

  • Coolant seeping near the block heater
  • Tripped outlet or burning smell when the heater is plugged in

Check before buying

  • Check the VIN for 25V-685
  • Look for a block-heater cord at the grille and for coolant residue on the block

Years:
2023

Ford's Customer Satisfaction Program 23B42 covers 2023 Rangers built at Michigan Assembly from March 27 to April 19, 2023 (plus some Broncos and Explorers), after a damaged casting tool could leave a crack in the right side of the engine block. The remedy is a new long block; the program ran through October 31, 2026 and affected 131 U.S. vehicles in total.

Symptoms

  • Low coolant level or coolant pressure warning
  • Visible coolant leak under the truck
  • Overheat warning

Check before buying

  • Check the build date on the door-jamb label
  • Ask a Ford dealer whether 23B42 applies and was completed

Safety recall
Generation:
2019–2023 Ranger
Years:
2019
Engine:
All engines

Ford recalled certain 2019 Rangers because the HVAC blower motor can electrically short, raising the risk of a fire. Some trucks repaired under that campaign needed a second fix under 20V-137 because the replacement motor was also affected.

Symptoms

  • Blower stops working or runs intermittently
  • Burning smell from the vents

Check before buying

  • Check the VIN for 19V-726 and 20V-137
  • Run the fan on every speed during the test drive

NHTSA recall: 19V-726 (2019-10)

Years:
2024–2025
Engine:

Two recalls cover 2024–2025 Rangers and Broncos whose front upper control arm ball joint nut may not have been installed or tightened properly, which can let the control arm separate from the knuckle and cause a loss of steering control.

Symptoms

  • Clunk from the front suspension
  • Wandering or loose steering

Check before buying

  • Check the VIN for 24V-770 and 25V-310
  • Have the front suspension inspected on a lift

NHTSA recall: 25V-310 (2025-05)

Safety recall
Generation:
2024+ Ranger
Years:
2024

Ford recalled certain 2024 Rangers, 2024–2025 F-150s and Broncos, and other models because the transmission valve body may have been machined incorrectly, which can cause reverse gear to fail or the vehicle to move forward when in Reverse or Neutral. Dealers replace the main control valve body.

Symptoms

  • No reverse engagement
  • Vehicle creeping forward in Reverse or Neutral

Check before buying

  • Check the VIN for 25V-164
  • Test Reverse and Neutral on level ground during the inspection

  • Sudden loss of power

Check before buying

  • Check the VIN for 26V-343 before buying

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Ford Ranger problems?

The best-documented Ford Ranger issues are harsh or delayed shifts from the 10-speed automatic (2019–2023 Ranger, 2019–2023) and cracked engine block on some 2023 2.3L builds (2019–2023 Ranger, 2023). Which ones matter depends on the generation and engine, so check the section for the exact truck or car you are looking at.

Has the Ford Ranger had any recalls?

Yes. Recalls covered on this page include engine block heater can crack and short circuit (NHTSA 25V-685), HVAC blower motor can short (2019) (NHTSA 19V-726), front upper control arm ball joint fastener may be loose or missing (NHTSA 25V-310) and transmission valve body machining can cause reverse failure (NHTSA 25V-164). Recall repairs are free at a Ford dealer; check any specific vehicle’s VIN with NHTSA to see whether the work was completed.

What should I check before buying a used Ranger?

Drive the truck from a cold start through low-speed traffic. Check the build date on the door-jamb label. A pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic covers these and should include a scan for stored fault codes.

Is the Ford Ranger reliable?

Most well-known Ranger problems are tied to a specific generation, engine or transmission rather than the model as a whole, and many have a published fix, updated part or recall remedy. Owner-complaint volume by model year is tracked separately in CarWhere’s years-to-avoid research.
