Honda Civic problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Civic years with the most serious open-recall risk are 2001–2005, because of Takata air bag inflators; Honda told 2001–2002 owners with unrepaired inflators to stop driving. Newer Civics mostly have fix-and-forget recalls: fuel pumps (23V858), seat weight sensors (26V332) and, on 2022–2025 models, steering gearbox recall 24V744. Check any VIN for open work.

CarWhere lists 22 documented Civic issues, including 19 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source. Recall entries come from NHTSA's recall dataset on the DOT open-data portal, which may not list every campaign, so run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

1.5L turbo oil dilution: software update and warranty extension (2016–2018)

Moderate
Generation:
10th gen (2016–2021)
Years:
2016–2018
Powertrain:
1.5L turbo

Some 2016–2018 Civics with the 1.5L turbo can build up fuel and moisture in the engine oil, mostly with repeated short trips in very cold weather. Honda Canada’s owner letter lists possible effects: a check-engine light from misfire or rich running, a low oil pressure light, and, rarely, camshaft noise. The fix updates engine, CVT and climate-control software and changes the oil. In the U.S., trade press reported in May 2019 that Honda extended coverage on the camshafts and rocker arms of these cars to six years with unlimited miles. This was a service campaign, not a safety recall.

Symptoms

  • Oil level rising above the upper dipstick mark or smelling of fuel
  • Check-engine light, especially in winter
  • Whirring or ticking noise from the top of the engine

Check before buying

  • Ask a Honda dealer whether the oil-dilution software update was performed on the VIN
  • Pull the dipstick: note a high level or fuel smell
  • Ask for oil-change records showing regular service

Certain 2016 Civics with the 2.0L engine built September 22, 2015 to February 3, 2016 may have pistons missing a wrist pin circlip or with one installed incorrectly. The pin can drift and damage the cylinder, which can seize the engine. Dealers inspect and replace piston assemblies and any damaged parts for free. The recall covered 42,129 cars.

Symptoms

  • Knocking from the engine
  • Engine seizure or stall

Check before buying

  • Run the 17-digit VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete

2017–2020
Powertrain:
All

In June 2021 Honda Canada extended the warranty on air conditioner condensers on 2018–2020 Civic coupes and sedans and 2017–2020 Civic hatchbacks to 10 years from first registration, with no mileage limit, because of a quality issue that can make condensers leak. Owners who had already paid for the repair could claim reimbursement. That release covers Canadian vehicles; U.S. buyers should ask a Honda dealer whether a U.S. warranty extension shows for the VIN.

Symptoms

  • A/C blows warm air
  • Refrigerant needs repeated recharging

Check before buying

  • Run the A/C on max during the test drive and check that the air is cold
  • Ask a Honda dealer for the VIN’s warranty extension and campaign history

By recall severity, the riskiest used Civics are 2001–2005 models that still have an unrepaired Takata air bag; Honda asked 2001–2002 owners with open Alpha-inflator recalls to stop driving. Any Civic is a reasonable buy once its VIN shows every air bag and fuel pump recall complete.

Does the Civic 1.5 turbo have oil dilution problems?

Some 2016–2018 Civics with the 1.5L turbo can collect fuel in the oil, mostly on short trips in very cold weather. Honda released software updates and, per May 2019 trade reports, extended camshaft and rocker-arm coverage to six years with unlimited miles. Ask a dealer if the update was done.

What is the Honda Civic steering recall?

Recall 24V744 covers 2022–2025 Civics, including the Type R and 2025 Civic Hybrid, whose steering gearbox may have too much internal friction and feel hard to turn. Dealers replace the worm gear spring and regrease the gearbox for free. Owner letters went out November 18, 2024.

Is the Civic included in the Honda fuel pump recall?

Yes. Recalls 20V314 and 21V215 covered 2018–2020 Civics, and expansion 23V858 lists 2013–2023 Civic coupes, sedans, hatchbacks and Type Rs among the covered models. Dealers replace the fuel pump module free of charge; check the exact VIN.

Which Civics have Takata air bags?

Takata inflator recalls cover 2001–2005 Civics (driver and passenger, 15V320 and 15V370) and 2006–2011 Civics (passenger, 16V346, 17V030 and 18V042). Older 1996–2000 Civics are covered by a separate non-azide inflator recall, 20V026.

How do I check a used Civic for open recalls?

Enter the 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or recalls.honda.com, then ask a Honda dealer for the completed-campaign history. Recall repairs are free regardless of age, mileage or owner.
