Honda Fit problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

By NHTSA recall count, the second-generation 2009–2013 Fit has the most campaigns (10–12 per year), mostly Takata air bag inflators plus a 2009–2010 VTEC spring recall. The 2016 Fit has the fewest, with 1. Honda sold three US generations: 2007–2008, 2009–2013 and 2015–2020.

CarWhere lists 13 documented Fit issues, including 13 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source. Recall entries come from NHTSA's recall dataset on the DOT open-data portal, which may not list every campaign, so run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

Generation:
2nd generation (2009–2013)
Years:
2007–2013

Water can get into the driver door and reach the master window switch, which may overheat, smoke, melt or catch fire. Recall 10V033 (141,000 cars) added a cover; recall 13V260 (143,083 cars) re-recalled them because that fix could be insufficient, and replaced the switch.

Frequently asked questions

Which Honda Fit years should I avoid?

By recall count, the 2010 Fit has the most NHTSA campaigns (12), then 2009, 2011 and 2012 (11 each). Most are Takata inflator recalls with a free fix, so a 2009–2013 Fit with every campaign completed is a reasonable buy; an unrepaired one is not.

Which Honda Fit years have the fewest recalls?

The 2016 Fit is named in 1 NHTSA campaign (the 15V697 grab-handle bracket on LX models). The 2015, 2018 and 2020 Fits each have 4, versus 10 to 12 per year for 2009–2013.

Did the 2015 Honda Fit have CVT problems?

Recall 15V574 updated CVT software on 2015 Fits built March 12, 2014 to May 12, 2015, because the original settings could damage the drive pulley shaft and cause a loss of acceleration. A separate recall, 15V559, replaced ignition coils on early 2015 Fits.

Are Honda Fits in the Takata air bag recall?

Yes. 2009–2013 Fits are in driver inflator recall 16V061, and 2007–2013 Fits are in passenger inflator recalls such as 16V344, 16V346, 17V029, 17V030, 18V042 and 18V661 depending on year and region. The 2015–2020 Fit is not in those campaigns.

What should I check on a 2007–2008 Fit?

Confirm recall 13V260 (driver master window switch, which can overheat after water gets in) rather than only the earlier 10V033 fix, headlight recall 10V624, the passenger Takata inflator and, on manual cars, drive shaft recall 20V770.
