Honda HR-V problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

No HR-V year stands out as one to avoid on recall severity. The HR-V has fewer recalls than Honda’s bigger SUVs, and none are Takata air bag recalls. The first generation’s main campaigns are 2018–2020 fuel pumps, a 2019–2022 rearview camera fix and seat weight sensors. The 2023-and-later HR-V’s largest campaign is steering gearbox recall 24V744.

CarWhere lists 8 documented HR-V issues, including 8 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source. Recall entries come from NHTSA's recall dataset on the DOT open-data portal, which may not list every campaign, so run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

Some 2016 HR-Vs built January 12 to May 20, 2015 may be missing the "Tire and Loading Information" placard, which breaks FMVSS 110 and could lead to wrong tire pressures. Dealers inspect and apply a new label for free; the recall began September 18, 2015 and covered 11,511 vehicles.

On 2019–2022 HR-Vs (and 2018–2020 Fit), a design error in the audio display power circuit can stop the rearview camera image from showing when the engine is started with a key, failing FMVSS 111. Frequently asked questions

What Honda HR-V years should I avoid?

No HR-V year stands out on recall severity. 2018–2020 models carry the most overlapping campaigns (fuel pump, camera, seat weight sensor), so check those VINs carefully. All the listed recalls are free fixes, and a completed recall history matters more than the model year.

Is the HR-V in the Honda fuel pump recall?

Yes. Recalls 20V314 and 21V215 covered 2018–2020 HR-Vs, and expansion 23V858 lists 2013–2023 HR-Vs among the covered Honda and Acura models. Dealers replace the low-pressure fuel pump module free of charge.

Why does my HR-V backup camera not work?

On 2019–2022 HR-Vs started with a key, a design error in the display power circuit can stop the camera image from appearing. Recall 24V384 replaced the earlier 23V046 fix, and vehicles already repaired under 23V046 need the new software too.

Does the 2023–2025 HR-V have a steering recall?

Yes. Recall 24V744 covers 2023–2025 HR-Vs whose steering gearbox may have too much internal friction. Dealers replace the worm gear spring and regrease the gearbox for free; letters went out November 18, 2024.

How do I check an HR-V for open recalls?

Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or recalls.honda.com, and ask a Honda dealer for the completed-campaign history. Recall work is free at any age or mileage.
