Infiniti G35 and G37: the G-line era and its move to Q40, Q50 and Q60

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The G35 sport sedan joined Infiniti in March 2002 with a 260-hp 3.5-liter V6, and the 280-hp G35 Coupe followed in November 2002. The G37 Coupe and Convertible were renamed Q60 for 2014 and the G37 sedan became the Q40 for 2015, while the all-new Q50 took over as Infiniti’s sport sedan.

Infiniti G35 and G37 (the G-line era) history

Infiniti’s own history credits the G35 with a turnaround. The sedan was introduced in March 2002 as a 2003 model, the G35 Coupe followed that November and the FX crossover in January 2003, and Infiniti sales passed 100,000 for the first time in 2003, reaching 119,000.

The G35 was built on Nissan’s FM (front mid-ship) platform, which places the engine behind the front axle for better weight balance. The sedan launched with a 260-hp 3.5-liter V6 and the coupe with 280 hp.

The 3.7-liter G37 followed, and Infiniti added a G37 Convertible with a folding hardtop and 325 hp in 2009. Under the 2014 renaming the G37 Coupe and Convertible became the Q60 and the G37 sedan the Q40, while the new Q50 and, from 2017, an all-new Q60 coupe carried the line forward with the 400-hp Red Sport 400 versions.[1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[6]

What to check before you buy one

  • Check the passenger air bag recalls by VIN: 10V175 for 2005–2007 G35s and 08V521 for 2007–2008 G35 Sedans and 2008 G37 Coupes.
  • Confirm body style and transmission from the VIN and paperwork. The G35 and G37 were sold as sedans and coupes, with manual and automatic gearboxes depending on version.
  • Do not mix up the Q40 and Q50 in listings. The Q40 is the renamed G37 sedan; the Q50 is a different, newer car.
