Infiniti’s Q and QX names: what every old model became

By CarWhere Research · Updated

Starting with the 2014 model year, Infiniti renamed its lineup: cars took a Q prefix and SUVs a QX prefix, each with a two-digit number for its place in the range. The JX35 became the QX60, the QX56 became the QX80, and the G37 sedan became the Q40 for 2015.

Infiniti’s 2014 Q and QX renaming history

On December 17, 2012, Infiniti announced a new naming system for its whole range from the 2014 model year. Sedans, coupes and convertibles would carry a Q prefix and crossovers and SUVs a QX prefix, each followed by a two-digit number showing the model’s place in the lineup.

Infiniti said the Q harked back to the Q45, its 1989 flagship. The first car to wear the new badge was the all-new Q50 sports sedan, unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January 2013, and the rest of the range was renamed as 2014 models arrived.

The renaming means the same vehicle can appear under two names in listings and records. A 2013 JX35 and a 2014 QX60, for example, are the same model line, and several recalls name both.[1],[2]

Engine and drivetrain facts

  • Renamed models kept their engines. Infiniti’s 2014 notes describe the Q70 as previously the M56 and M37 and the QX70 as previously the FX50 and FX37.
  • The Q40 used the G37 sedan’s 328-hp 3.7-liter V6 with VVEL and a 7-speed automatic; Infiniti said only the badge changed.
  • The all-new 2014 Q50 offered a 328-hp 3.7-liter V6 or a net 360-hp hybrid.

What to check before you buy one

  • Search listings under both names. A used QX60 shopper should also look at 2013 JX35s, and a QX80 shopper at QX56s.
  • Check recalls by VIN, not by name. Several campaigns, such as the 2013 JX35 and 2014 QX60 recalls, list both names.
  • Remember the Q50 was all-new for 2014, not a renamed G37 sedan; the G37 sedan continued as the Q40 for 2015.
