Hybrid powertrain and performance

McLaren quotes 0–100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 6.8 seconds and 0–300 km/h in 16.5 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 350 km/h (217 mph). In full electric mode the P1 covers 11 km (6.8 miles) on the NEDC cycle.[1]

How the P1 was built

Each P1 took about 17 days to build on average, with the line completing roughly one car a day. Before the 375 customer cars, McLaren built 13 experimental, 5 validation and 3 pre-production prototypes.[2]

What to check before buying a used P1

For a used P1, start with the two NHTSA recalls that cover it: a redesigned hood latch for 2014–2015 cars and a passenger front air bag inflator replacement. Both were free at McLaren retailers, and a retailer can confirm by VIN that each campaign was completed before you buy.

  • Hood latch recall 15V836

Confirm the secondary hood latch was replaced with McLaren’s redesigned latch (campaign began January 18, 2016).[4]

  • Air bag inflator recall 19V141

Confirm the passenger frontal air bag was replaced under the 2019 campaign covering 2014–2015 P1s.[4]

  • Electric-mode function

McLaren quotes 11 km (6.8 miles) of NEDC electric range; checking that E-mode engages is a simple test of the hybrid system.[1]
