Mercedes-AMG ONE: history, specs and how many were made

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Mercedes-AMG ONE is a road-legal hypercar built around a Formula 1-derived hybrid powertrain. Shown as Project ONE in 2017, it entered customer production in Coventry, England, limited to 275 cars. Mercedes-AMG quotes 1,049 hp from one combustion engine and four electric motors, and it holds the Nürburgring-Nordschleife production-car record.

Mercedes-AMG ONE history

Mercedes-AMG previewed the car in 2017, for its 50th anniversary, as a street-legal hypercar offering "unadulterated Formula 1 technology for the road" — the first commercially available vehicle with an F1 hybrid powertrain and road approval, with all-wheel drive and an all-electric front axle.

Adapting a Formula 1 power unit for road use took years of development. Customer production finally began at a dedicated small-series line in Coventry, England, set up with manufacturing partner Multimatic, with the run fixed at 275 cars.

In October 2022 the ONE became the fastest production car on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Driver Maro Engel lowered that record to an officially measured and notarized 6:29.090 on September 23, 2024.[1],[3],[4]

Engine and drivetrain facts

  • Mercedes-AMG's 2024 record release gives 1,049 hp (782 kW) for the complete hybrid system; some auction catalogs quote 1,063 hp, which is the same output in metric horsepower (PS).
  • The front axle is driven only by its two electric motors, so torque can be distributed wheel by wheel.
  • For the 2024 record lap the car ran in "Race Plus" mode, which lowers it by 1.5 inches at the front axle and 1.2 inches at the rear and deploys maximum active aerodynamics, plus a DRS-style drag-reduction system.

What to check before you buy one

  • Confirm the car's history with Mercedes-AMG directly — with only 275 built, chassis-by-chassis provenance is the market's main reference.
  • Ask for the service record of the hybrid system and battery; this is a race-derived powertrain with manufacturer-specified maintenance.
  • Check registration status for your country: auction listings show cars registered in Germany and sold with export or VAT restrictions.
  • Low odometer readings are common (an RM Sotheby's 2026 car showed 89 km), so condition and storage history matter more than mileage.

Public sale results are the only reliable price reference. At RM Sotheby's Monaco auction in 2026, a 2024 AMG ONE with 89 km sold for €2,817,500.[5]

How to verify the factory options of any Mercedes-AMG ONE

Even at this level, specification matters — paint, interior and option choices vary by car. A factory build record by VIN shows how a specific chassis was ordered.

All AMG ONEs are modern 17-character-VIN cars. It is a European-specification, ultra-low-volume model, so detailed build data may not exist for every VIN.[6]
