What Does AMG Stand For?
AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach — founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and Aufrecht's birthplace, Großaspach. Founded in 1967 as an independent racing-engine shop, AMG became Mercedes-Benz's in-house performance division: Daimler took a majority stake in 1999 and full ownership in 2005. Today Mercedes-AMG GmbH is based in Affalterbach, Germany.

| Letter | Stands for | Who or what |
|---|---|---|
| A | Aufrecht | Hans Werner Aufrecht, co-founder and former Mercedes-Benz engineer |

AMG history in brief
AMG began as a tuner and racing-engine builder working on Mercedes-Benz cars from outside the company. Its breakthrough was a race result with a heavy luxury sedan, and its later history is a steady move inside Mercedes-Benz.
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1967 | Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, both former Mercedes-Benz engineers, found AMG as a racing-engine development company in Burgstall an der Murr, near Stuttgart. |
| 1971 | An AMG-prepared Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 finishes first in class and second overall at the Spa 24 Hours. |
| 1970s | AMG moves its main operations to Affalterbach, still its headquarters today. |
| 1990 | AMG and Daimler-Benz sign a cooperation agreement in October 1990. |
| 1993 | The C 36 AMG is presented — the first car jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. |
| 1999 | On January 1, 1999, Daimler takes a majority stake and the company becomes Mercedes-AMG GmbH. |
| 2005 | DaimlerChrysler acquires the remaining shares in January 2005; AMG becomes a wholly owned subsidiary. |
“One Man, One Engine”
AMG's best-known manufacturing principle is that one technician assembles a handcrafted engine from start to finish, then signs the plaque on top of it. Mercedes-Benz still markets specific engines as handcrafted — mbusa.com describes the 2026 AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE as using a “handcrafted AMG 2.0L inline-4.” Not every AMG-badged car carries a hand-built engine, so the signed plaque, not the badge, is what tells you a given engine was built this way.
AMG vs AMG Line vs 35, 43, 53 and 63
“AMG” on a Mercedes can mean three different things: a full Mercedes-AMG model, an AMG Line appearance package on a regular model, or an aftermarket badge. The model numbers are performance tiers rather than engine displacements — today's AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE has a 2.0-liter engine. For how the rest of the lineup is named, see Mercedes model names explained.
| Badge | What it is | US example (starting MSRP, USD) | Powertrain |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMG Line | Appearance and equipment package on a regular Mercedes | C 300 or GLC 300 with AMG Line | Standard Mercedes engine |
| AMG 35 | Entry AMG on compact models | AMG CLA 35 Coupe ($56,600), AMG GLB 35 SUV ($60,600) | AMG-tuned four-cylinder |
| AMG 43 | Entry-to-mid AMG on mid-size models | AMG C 43 Sedan ($64,150; 416 hp) | Handcrafted 2.0L four-cylinder with turbo and hybrid tech (C 43) |
| AMG 53 | Mid-tier AMG | AMG E 53 HYBRID Sedan ($91,100; 577 hp combined) | Turbo inline-6 with electric assist (E 53 is a plug-in hybrid) |
| AMG 55 | Mid-to-upper tier on GT and SL | AMG GT 55 Coupe ($137,450), AMG SL 55 Roadster ($147,750) | See the model page on mbusa.com |
| AMG 63 | Top AMG tier | AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE ($88,000; 671 hp), AMG G 63 ($198,750) | Varies by model — the C 63 S E PERFORMANCE uses a 2.0L four-cylinder plug-in hybrid |
Starting MSRPs and outputs as listed on mbusa.com, checked November 3, 2026; excludes destination and options. An “S” after the number (63 S) marks a higher-output version of that tier.
Buying a used AMG: confirm what it really is
AMG badges, wheels and bumpers are common add-ons, and an AMG Line car can look a lot like a full AMG from the outside. The car's factory record settles it: the Mercedes-Benz data card lists the model designation and three-digit option codes the car left the factory with. You can also read the Mercedes option codes reference, see what the AMG GT build sheet covers, or browse the Mercedes-Benz research hub for engine codes and model history.

FAQ
What does AMG stand for on a Mercedes?
AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach: founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, plus Großaspach, the town where Aufrecht was born. The company started in 1967 as an independent racing-engine shop and is now Mercedes-AMG GmbH, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz, based in Affalterbach, Germany.
Is AMG owned by Mercedes-Benz?
Yes. AMG signed a cooperation agreement with Daimler-Benz in 1990, Daimler took a majority stake on January 1, 1999 (when the company became Mercedes-AMG GmbH), and it acquired the remaining shares in January 2005.
What is the difference between AMG and AMG Line?
An AMG model (for example the AMG C 43 or AMG GLE 63 S) is engineered by Mercedes-AMG with its own engine, suspension, brakes and tuning. AMG Line is an appearance and equipment package on a regular Mercedes — bumpers, wheels and interior trim — with the standard powertrain. A C 300 with AMG Line is still a C 300.
What does "One Man, One Engine" mean?
It is AMG’s hand-assembly principle: one technician builds a given engine from start to finish and signs a plaque on it. It applies to AMG’s handcrafted engines, not to every engine fitted to an AMG-badged car.
What is the difference between AMG 43, 53 and 63?
They are performance tiers, not exact engine sizes. On current US models, 35 and 43 sit at the entry level, 53 models use a six-cylinder with electric assist, and 63 is the top tier. The 2026 AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE, for instance, uses a handcrafted 2.0-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid rated at 671 hp, per mbusa.com.
How can I tell if a used Mercedes is a real AMG?
Badges, wheels and body kits are easy to add, so check the factory record: the model designation and option codes on the car’s data card. CarWhere’s Mercedes-Benz data card by VIN shows the factory model and installed options recorded for that exact car when build data exists.
