Mitsubishi known issues by model
By CarWhere Research · Updated
CarWhere documents 56 Mitsubishi problems and 56 NHTSA safety recalls across 6 models — Outlander, Outlander PHEV, Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Mirage and Lancer Evolution — organized by generation. Each entry lists affected model years, symptoms, what to check on a used vehicle before buying, and the sources behind it.

Mitsubishi Outlander problems
The most common recent Outlander problem is a rearview camera that can freeze or go blank: recall 25V-369 covers about 198,940 2022–2024 Outlander and 2023–2025 Outlander PHEV models. 2022 models also had fuel pump and seat belt retractor recalls. Older Outlanders have corrosion-related recalls for liftgate struts, parking brakes and the front crossmember.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV problems
Outlander PHEV recalls in NHTSA records are shared with the gasoline Outlander. Second-generation 2023–2026 models are covered by rearview camera software recalls; first-generation 2018–2022 models have liftgate gas spring, rear seat belt and 2018 brake-software campaigns. We found no recall for the plug-in battery or electric motors.
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport problems
The most recent Outlander Sport recall, 22V-563, covers about 76,508 2019–2022 models with the CVT whose transmission software could stall the engine at speed. Earlier 2011–2016 models have corrosion-related recalls for the front crossmember, wipers, parking brake and liftgate supports, plus two CVT campaigns for 2015–2016.
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross problems
The Eclipse Cross has two NHTSA recalls in the DOT dataset, both software fixes for early cars: 18V-621 for 2018 models whose brake hydraulic unit could keep safety systems from intervening, and 18V-620 for 2018–2019 models whose pedestrian-detection braking could last too long. We found none for 2020-and-later models.
Mitsubishi Mirage problems
Most Mirage recalls involve the air bag system. Recall 17V-686 covers about 83,555 2014–2018 Mirage hatchbacks whose air bag control unit could disable the air bags after rough-road vibration, and 19V-330 covers 2017–2018 Mirage G4 sedans. 2014–2015 models also have air bag connector and sensor campaigns.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution problems
The most serious Lancer Evolution recall is for passenger frontal air bag inflators that can rupture: 17V-569 covers 2004–2006 Lancer and Lancer Evolution models, with 16V-334 for 2006–2007. Evolution X owners should check the 2008–2013 clutch master cylinder recall (13V-446) and the 2008–2009 fuel return pipe campaign.
Confirm how a used Mitsubishi was built before you buy.
Engine, transmission and packages decide which issues apply. The CarWhere Mitsubishi build sheet reconstructs factory colors, options and packages from licensed VIN-level build data — availability is checked free, and it is $9.99 only when detailed build data is found for that VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common Mitsubishi problems?
They depend on the model and powertrain. Across the 6 Mitsubishi models covered here, the most documented items are rearview camera image may freeze or not display (recalls 25V-369, 23V-345) on the Outlander; rearview camera image may freeze or not display (recalls 25V-369, 23V-345) on the Outlander PHEV; CVT control software may cause an engine stall (recall 22V-563) on the Outlander Sport. Each model page lists issues by generation with sources.
How do I check a Mitsubishi for open recalls?
Enter the 17-character VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup or the Mitsubishi owner site, or ask a Mitsubishi dealer to run it. Recall repairs are free. CarWhere’s known-issues pages list major recall campaign numbers by model and generation.
Are known issues the same as years to avoid?
No. Known-issues pages explain specific, documented mechanical problems and recalls. Years-to-avoid research ranks model years against each other, so the two answer different questions and are linked from each model page where both exist.
