2026 Outlander: the new 1.5L turbo mild hybrid
For 2026 every gasoline Outlander uses a Mitsubishi-developed 1.5L turbocharged four with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, rated at 174 hp and 206 lb-ft. It replaces the 2.5L four (181 hp, 181 lb-ft) used from 2022 to 2025. Both use a CVT.
EPA's combined rating for the front-wheel-drive model rises from 27 mpg (2025 2.5L) to 28 mpg (2026). With S-AWC the figures are 26 mpg (2025) and 27 mpg (2026). Towing capacity stays at 2,000 lbs.
Is the Outlander built on a Nissan platform?
Mitsubishi says the 2022-and-later Outlander rides on a platform developed through its partnership in the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, with torsional rigidity 33% higher than the previous model. Mitsubishi's releases do not name a specific Nissan model that shares it.
The Outlander uses its own engines: the 2.5L four through 2025 and the Mitsubishi-designed 1.5L turbo mild hybrid from 2026. The plug-in hybrid uses Mitsubishi's twin-motor S-AWC system.[6][20][1][21]
Third row and cargo space
Mitsubishi lists seating for seven and 10.9 cu ft of cargo space behind the third row, 30.6 cu ft behind the second row and 64.3 cu ft behind the first row (with sunroof). Third-row legroom is 18.7 inches, so the rear seats suit children or short trips.
The 2026 Outlander is 185.8 inches long on a 106.5-inch wheelbase, with 8.4 inches of ground clearance.[2]
Warranty and included maintenance
Mitsubishi's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty applies only to the original owner of a new vehicle bought from an authorized dealer. Later owners get the balance of the 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty instead, which matters when you buy a used Outlander.
New 2026 models also include a 7-year/100,000-mile anti-corrosion warranty, 5-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a 2-year/30,000-mile maintenance program.[1][22]
Mitsubishi Outlander generations by year
| Generation | US model years | Engines | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fourth generation | 2022–present | 2.5L four (181 hp, 181 lb-ft), CVT, 2022–2025; 1.5L turbo mild hybrid (174 hp, 206 lb-ft), CVT, 2026–present; FWD or S-AWC | Launched in spring 2021 as a 2022 model on a platform Mitsubishi says was developed through the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance. Third-row seating is standard. A 2025 mid-cycle refresh revised the styling and interior; the mild-hybrid 1.5L turbo replaced the 2.5L for 2026.[6][7][1][2] |
| Third generation | 2014–2020 | 2.4L four with CVT (ES, SE); 3.0L V6 with 6-speed automatic (GT, S-AWC) | Mitsubishi priced the redesigned 2014 Outlander from a $22,995 net MSRP before an $825 delivery charge and said it weighed more than 200 lbs less than the previous generation. EPA lists no gasoline Outlander for the 2021 model year; the plug-in hybrid continued.[9][15][10][16] |
| Second generation | 2007–2013 | 3.0L V6 with 6-speed automatic; EPA also lists a 2.4L four with CVT for 2013 | EPA ratings for the 2007 V6 with FWD are 17/25/20 mpg. Recall records describe 2007–2013 Outlanders built from September 2006 to March 2013.[12][17][18] |
| First generation | 2003–2006 | 2.4L four; 4-speed automatic, with a 5-speed manual listed by EPA for 2006; FWD or AWD | The original US Outlander. EPA rated the 2003 FWD automatic at 18/24/21 mpg.[14][13] |
Mitsubishi Outlander problems and recalls
The most common recent Outlander problem is a rearview camera that can freeze or go blank: recall 25V-369 covers about 198,940 2022–2024 Outlander and 2023–2025 Outlander PHEV models. 2022 models also had fuel pump and seat belt retractor recalls. Older Outlanders have corrosion-related recalls for liftgate struts, parking brakes and the front crossmember.
