P0756: Shift Solenoid "B" Performance/Stuck Off
P0756 means the transmission computer has seen gear ratios suggesting shift solenoid B is not applying properly, as if it were stuck off or working poorly.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P0756 sets
The powertrain or transmission control module (PCM/TCM) uses speed sensor data to calculate actual gear ratio and compares it with the commanded gear. When the observed ratios match what would happen if shift solenoid B failed to apply, it sets P0756. The solenoid's circuit may still test normal electrically. Which gears depend on solenoid B is manufacturer-specific.
Common causes of P0756
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Low, dirty, or worn transmission fluid
- Shift solenoid B sticking or restricted by debris
- Sticking shift valve in the valve body
- Worn valve body bores or seals leaking pressure
- Worn clutch for the affected gear
- Faulty input or output speed sensor
P0756 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Missing upshifts, often into a middle gear
- Engine speed flare during shifts
- Slipping or delayed shifts
- Limp mode on some vehicles
How P0756 is diagnosed
- Check fluid level and condition.
- Scan for related ratio and speed sensor codes and record freeze frame.
- Identify the gears controlled by solenoid B for this transmission.
- Road test while comparing commanded and actual gear in live data.
- Verify solenoid B electrically, then check its hydraulic function.
- Inspect the valve body and pan for debris, and pressure test if needed.
Typical fixes for P0756
- Service the fluid and filter
- Replace shift solenoid B
- Clean, repair, or replace the valve body
- Replace a faulty speed sensor if it caused false ratio data
- Overhaul the transmission if clutches are worn
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.
Manufacturer notes
Commonly reported on GM 4L60-E family transmissions, where solenoid B is often the 2-3 shift solenoid. Assignments differ on other transmissions; check factory service information.

P0756 FAQ
What does code P0756 mean?
P0756 means the transmission computer has seen gear ratios suggesting shift solenoid B is not applying properly, as if it were stuck off or working poorly. The standard definition is "Shift Solenoid "B" Performance/Stuck Off."
Can I drive with a P0756 code?
Drive only to get it repaired. A solenoid B performance fault can leave the transmission without certain gears or cause slipping, which accelerates internal wear.
Why does P0756 return after replacing the solenoid?
If the root cause is a sticking valve, worn bores, or contaminated fluid, a new solenoid alone will not correct the hydraulic problem.
Can P0756 cause a vehicle to start in second or third gear?
On some transmissions, yes. When a shift solenoid cannot apply, the gear combination changes and the vehicle may launch in a higher gear than normal.
