P2188: System Too Rich at Idle (Bank 1)
P2188 means the engine computer found bank 1 running too rich at idle, with its fuel correction pulling out as much fuel as permitted.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P2188 sets
At idle, the powertrain control module (PCM) adjusts a dedicated fuel correction for bank 1 based on the upstream oxygen sensor. If that correction reaches its lean-side limit and the sensor still indicates rich, P2188 sets. Enabling conditions and limits are manufacturer-specific.
Common causes of P2188
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- Leaking or dripping fuel injector
- Excessive fuel pressure or faulty regulator
- Saturated evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister or stuck-open purge valve
- Faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor reading low
- Skewed upstream oxygen sensor
- Fuel in the engine oil
P2188 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle
- Fuel smell from the exhaust
- Reduced fuel economy
- Black smoke in severe cases
How P2188 is diagnosed
- Scan for codes and review freeze frame data.
- Check idle fuel trims and see if they change when the purge valve is commanded closed or its hose is pinched.
- Test fuel pressure and hold pressure after shutdown for leakdown.
- Check MAF readings and upstream sensor response.
- Smell the engine oil for fuel dilution.
- Inspect spark plugs for fuel fouling.
Typical fixes for P2188
- Replace a stuck-open EVAP purge valve
- Replace a leaking injector
- Repair fuel pressure regulation faults
- Clean or replace the MAF sensor
- Replace the upstream oxygen sensor if skewed
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

P2188 FAQ
What does code P2188 mean?
P2188 means the engine computer found bank 1 running too rich at idle, with its fuel correction pulling out as much fuel as permitted. The standard definition is "System Too Rich at Idle (Bank 1)."
Can I drive with a P2188 code?
Short drives are usually fine, but diagnose it within days. A rich idle wastes fuel, fouls spark plugs, and can harm the catalytic converter over time.
Can a purge valve cause P2188?
Yes. A purge valve stuck open can draw fuel vapor into the intake at idle, making the mixture rich.
Why does P2188 matter for the catalytic converter?
Unburned fuel from a rich mixture can overheat the converter and shorten its life.
