Porsche 986 Boxster: History, Specs & What to Know

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Porsche 986 Boxster is the first-generation Boxster, a mid-engine, water-cooled roadster shown as a concept in Detroit in January 1993 and built from August 1996. Porsche made 164,874. It shared its front end with the 996 911, launched with a 2.5-liter, 204 PS flat-six and added the 3.2-liter Boxster S in 2000.

In the early 1990s Porsche's economic situation was tense and the company was restructuring. The Boxster concept, drawn with cues from the 550 Spyder and 718 RS 60 Spyder, drew such a strong reaction in Detroit in 1993 that Porsche committed to building it. It shared its front end with the 996 911 that followed in 1997.

To meet worldwide demand, Porsche added a second Boxster assembly site in Finland. The 986 ran through the 2004 model year, ending with the 1,953-car Boxster S 50 Years of the 550 Spyder edition, and led to the 987 for 2005.

986 Boxster engine and drivetrain facts

  • Mid-mounted, water-cooled flat-six (M96 family), rear-wheel drive.[1],[5]
  • Shared its front end with the 996-generation 911.[1]
  • Tiptronic S was offered as a five-speed automatic.[1]

What to check before you buy a 986 Boxster

  • IMS bearing: the M96 engine's intermediate-shaft bearing is the 986's best-known risk; ask whether it has been replaced and get the invoice.[5]
  • Bore scoring and rear main seal leaks are also documented on 986 engines; a borescope inspection and a look for oil between engine and gearbox are worthwhile.[5]
  • The class-action IMS settlement for 2001–2005 cars has expired, so owners can no longer claim under it.[5]
  • Check the convertible top, its plastic or glass rear window and the drains behind the seats.

How to verify a 986 Boxster's factory options

Every 986 carries a 17-character VIN, so a build sheet can show the factory paint, interior and option codes for the car. The option sticker in the maintenance booklet, if present, lists the same M-codes.

The CarWhere build sheet decodes a US-market Porsche VIN into its factory record: paint, interior, option codes and equipment as built. $9.99, and the free availability check shows whether build data exists before you pay.
