Porsche 911 Sport Classic: 997 & 992 Specs, Numbers

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Porsche 911 Sport Classic is a limited-run, ducktail-equipped 911 sold in two generations: 250 cars on the 997 in 2009, and 1,250 on the 992 in 2022. The 992 version combines a 550 PS (543 hp US) twin-turbo flat-six, a seven-speed manual and rear-wheel drive.

Porsche revived limited-series 911s with the first Sport Classic, revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt IAA. Based on the 997, it was capped at 250 cars, all sold within 48 hours, and it brought back the fixed ducktail spoiler of the 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 along with 408 hp and an interior trimmed by Porsche Exclusive. Its grey paint and retro detailing set the template for later heritage specials.

The 992-generation Sport Classic arrived in April 2022 as the second of four Heritage Design models. Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur built 1,250 of them. It uses the wide body otherwise reserved for the 911 Turbo, a double-bubble roof and a new ducktail, and pairs a 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six with rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed manual. Sport Grey Metallic paint and Pepita-pattern upholstery tie it to early Porsches.

What made the 911 Sport Classic significant

  • The 997 Sport Classic marked Porsche's comeback for limited-series 911s in 2009.[1]
  • The 992 Sport Classic was the second of four Heritage Design collector models, following the 2020 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition.[2]
  • It paired the 911 Turbo's wide body with a twin-turbo engine, a seven-speed manual and rear-wheel drive.[2]

What to check before you buy a 911 Sport Classic

  • Confirm which generation and market the car is from. Both runs are numbered limited editions (250 for the 997, 1,250 for the 992), so check the VIN, build data and limited-edition documentation against each other.[1],[2]
  • On a 997 Sport Classic, make sure the ducktail spoiler and the Porsche Exclusive interior are original parts and not retrofits to a regular Carrera S. Porsche documentation is the reference.[1]
  • On a 992, check the Heritage Design details against the original order: Sport Grey Metallic paint, Black/Classic Cognac leather and Pepita upholstery are the signature items to verify.[2]
  • Ask for clutch and service records; a high-torque twin-turbo engine paired with a manual gearbox makes clutch condition worth checking.
  • For a 992, ask a Porsche dealer about remaining new-car warranty or Certified Pre-Owned eligibility. For either generation, get an independent pre-purchase inspection that includes paint-depth readings.
