Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS: Specs & Prices by Generation

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS is the all-wheel-drive 911 Targa with GTS performance, sold since the 991 generation. US ratings rose from 430 hp for the 2016 model year to 450 hp, then 473 hp, then 532 hp system power with the 2025 T-Hybrid, which listed at $186,000.

The Targa 4 GTS joins two 911 ideas: the Targa body Porsche introduced in 1965, with its fixed roll bar and removable roof section, and the GTS tier that sits between the Carrera S and the GT cars. Since the 991 generation brought a fully automatic Targa roof that stows behind the rear seats, every Targa has been all-wheel drive, so every Targa GTS is a Targa 4 GTS. It gets the GTS engine, darkened trim and a richer standard spec, but it keeps the Targa 4S chassis rather than the lowered GTS coupe setup.

There have been four versions so far. The 991.1 car used a 430 hp naturally aspirated 3.8-liter engine and offered a seven-speed manual. The 991.2 moved to a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine with 450 hp. The 992.1 model, launched for 2022, made 473 hp and still offered a manual. For 2025, the 992.2 Targa 4 GTS switched to the 3.6-liter T-Hybrid powertrain, with 532 hp combined and PDK as standard.

What made the Targa 4 GTS significant

  • On the 991.1, the Targa 4 GTS paired the Targa body with the 430 hp naturally aspirated 3.8-liter engine, the last naturally aspirated Targa GTS.[2],[3]
  • For the 992 generation, Porsche notes the Targa GTS shares its chassis with the Targa 4S instead of the GTS coupe's lowered setup, and gets a black Targa bar and lettering.[4]
  • The 2025 GTS models were the first production 911s with Porsche's T-Hybrid system, adding 59 hp over the outgoing GTS.[5]

What to check before you buy a Targa 4 GTS

  • Confirm it is a factory GTS, not a Targa 4S wearing GTS badges or trim. The window sticker or Porsche build data should list the GTS model, and the engine output should match the generation in the table above.
  • On 992.1 cars, look for the GTS-specific details Porsche lists: Satin Black Targa bar and lettering, darkened headlights, Race-Tex interior touchpoints. Missing pieces can point to a converted or repaired car.[4]
  • Cycle the automatic roof several times. The center section folds away behind the rear seats, so listen for strain, watch that both sides move evenly, and check the seals and headliner for signs of water getting in.[1]
  • Check the gearbox against the build data. The 991 and 992.1 cars were offered with a manual or PDK. The 2025 T-Hybrid comes with PDK as standard, so a manual 992.2 Targa GTS listing is a red flag.[2],[4],[5]
  • Factory options make a large difference to price. Decode the option codes and compare them with the original sticker rather than relying on the seller's list.
  • Ask a Porsche dealer what new-car warranty remains or whether the car qualifies for Certified Pre-Owned coverage, which matters most for the 2025 hybrid system. Pair that with an independent pre-purchase inspection.

Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS FAQ

How much horsepower does the 911 Targa 4 GTS have?

It depends on the generation. The 2016 model-year 991.1 car makes 430 hp, the 991.2 makes 450 hp, the 992.1 (2022) makes 473 hp, and the 2025 T-Hybrid model makes 532 hp combined, with 478 hp from the engine alone.

How much does a Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS cost?

When Porsche Cars North America announced the 2025 Targa 4 GTS in May 2024, it listed at $186,000 plus a $1,995 delivery fee. The 992.1 version was $156,800 in June 2021, and the 2016 model-year 991.1 car was $132,800.

Is there a rear-wheel-drive Targa GTS?

No. Since the 991 generation, Porsche has offered the Targa only with all-wheel drive, which is why the GTS version is always called the Targa 4 GTS.

Can you get a 911 Targa 4 GTS with a manual?

Yes, on the 991 and 992.1 generations, which were offered with a seven-speed manual or PDK. The 2025 T-Hybrid Targa 4 GTS comes with an eight-speed PDK as standard.

Is the Targa 4 GTS lower than a Targa 4S?

Not on the 992 generation. Porsche says the Targa GTS uses the Targa 4S chassis instead of the lowered sport suspension fitted to GTS coupes. The differences are the GTS engine, brakes, trim and equipment.
