Tesla Model 3 generations and updates

Tesla Model 3 generations and major updates
Generation / updateYearsWhat changed
Original Model 32017–2023 model yearsDeliveries began in July 2017. EPA ranges rose from 220 mi (2019 Standard Range) to 358 mi (2022–2023 Long Range AWD).[18][7][8]
Updated Model 3 (searched as "Highland")2024 model year–presentTesla's Q4 2023 update reported the updated Model 3 in production at Shanghai, and its Q1 2024 update described a gradual ramp at Fremont. US 2024 listings show new variants, including Long Range RWD (363 mi) and the new Performance (303 mi). The Standard trim and Premium naming followed for 2026.[19][20][5]

Model 3 Performance: range and what changed

Tesla introduced the refreshed Model 3 Performance in the US in Q2 2024. fueleconomy.gov rates the 2024 Performance AWD at 303 miles and 112 MPGe combined, the 2025 at 298 miles, and the 2026 Performance AWD at 314 miles. The 2027 Performance AWD is rated 316 miles.

Before the refresh, the 2021–2023 Performance AWD was rated 315 miles. The 2020 Performance range depended on wheel size: 322 miles on 18-inch, 304 on 19-inch and 299 on 20-inch wheels. For 2026, fueleconomy.gov lists two Performance entries, "Performance" (309 mi) and "Performance AWD" (314 mi), with different motor descriptions.

Tesla publishes horsepower and 0–60 times for the Performance on tesla.com, which we could not open while building this page, so those figures are left blank here.[4][10][12][5][13][2][3]

Model 3 "Highland": the 2024 refresh

Tesla calls it the updated Model 3; "Highland" is the name many buyers search for, and Tesla does not use it in its filings. Tesla's Q4 2023 update said Shanghai production of the updated car reached full speed in under two months, and in Q1 2024 Tesla described a gradual ramp of the updated Model 3 at Fremont.

In US model-year terms, the change appears in fueleconomy.gov's 2024 listings. Every 2024 Model 3 lists permanent-magnet (ACPM) motors, and new variants appear: Long Range RWD at 363 miles and 137 MPGe, and Long Range AWD at 342 miles. Tesla then added the Performance in Q2 2024 and Long Range RWD in July 2024.[19][20][4][5]

Which Model 3 trim has the most range

For the 2026 model year, the Premium RWD has the longest EPA range at 363 miles and the best efficiency at 24.6 kWh/100 mi. The Premium AWD is rated 346 miles, the Standard RWD 321 miles and the Performance AWD 314 miles.

The Standard RWD launched in October 2025 at a $36,990 starting price, according to Tesla's Q3 2025 filing. Tesla says it uses a new battery pack and powertrain and comes with active safety features, a 15.4-inch touchscreen, and heated front seats and steering wheel.[2][1]

Charging port and Supercharger access

The Model 3 uses Tesla's own charging connector. Tesla opened it to other manufacturers in November 2022 as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), and SAE International published it as J3400. A Model 3 can therefore use Tesla Superchargers and J3400 stations without an adapter.

Tesla reported 8,904 Supercharger stations and 84,465 connectors worldwide at the end of Q3 2026. fueleconomy.gov lists about 11.7–12.1 hours for a full Level 2 (240 V) charge on 2026 models.[15][16][17][2]

Used Model 3: recall checks

Most Model 3 recalls were fixed with free over-the-air software updates, including the Autosteer recall 23V838000 that covered more than 2 million Teslas. A few needed a service visit: 21V00D000 (rearview camera harness on 2017–2020 cars) and 25V690000 (battery pack contactors on some 2025 cars).

Before buying a used Model 3, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm that any service-visit recalls were completed.[21][22][23]
