6.7 Power Stroke: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 6.7 Power Stroke is the Ford-designed V8 turbo-diesel in the Super Duty since the 2011 model year. Output climbed from 390 hp and 735 lb-ft at launch to 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft standard for 2020, with a 500 hp, 1,200 lb-ft High Output version from 2023. Fuel quality and filter changes matter most.

Ford introduced the 6.7-liter Power Stroke for the 2011 Super Duty as its first diesel designed, tested and built in-house, replacing the Navistar-supplied 6.4. It uses a compacted graphite iron block, aluminum heads and an inboard-exhaust layout that puts the turbocharger in the engine valley, plus a full aftertreatment system with a diesel particulate filter and urea-based SCR.

Ford has raised the rating several times: a free 2011 software update to 400 hp and 800 lb-ft, a larger turbo for 2015, and a heavily revised engine with a 10-speed automatic for 2020. The most discussed ownership issue is the Bosch CP4-family high-pressure fuel pump, which is the subject of a class action and, for 2020–2022 trucks, an NHTSA safety recall.

6.7 Power Stroke problems and what to check

CP4 high-pressure fuel pump failure (2011–2023 (litigation); 2020–2022 (recall))

Major repair

The 6.7 uses a Bosch CP4-family high-pressure fuel pump. A class action (Droesser v. Ford, E.D. Mich.) alleges the pump can shed metal into the fuel system when fuel lubricity or contamination is poor; a partial class covering five states was certified in 2026, with no finding on liability. Separately, recall 24V-957 addresses biodiesel deposits on the pump’s roller components in 2020–2022 trucks.[13][11][14]

Symptoms

  • Sudden loss of power or limp mode
  • Hard start or no start after stalling
  • Fuel-pressure related warning or trouble codes

Check before buying

  • Run the VIN for open recalls 24V-957 and 26V-158
  • Ask for fuel-filter service records at Ford’s interval
  • Avoid trucks with a history of water in fuel or off-spec fuel

Fuel leaks from filter and line components (2017, 2021, 2025)

Moderate

Three separate recalls cover underhood diesel fuel leaks: a fuel conditioning module shield that can dislodge and open the drain valve (2017), a secondary fuel filter cap that can develop a pinhole (2021), and cracked fuel return line connectors (2025). All three carry a fire risk if fuel reaches a hot surface.[15]

Symptoms

  • Diesel smell around the engine bay
  • Wet fuel residue near the filter housing or return lines
  • Fuel drips under the truck

Check before buying

  • Confirm recall completion for 16V-778, 22V-013 or 25V-306 as applicable
  • Inspect the fuel filter housing and lines for wetness

Emissions aftertreatment upkeep (DPF, SCR, DEF) (2011–present)

Minor

Every 6.7 runs a diesel particulate filter that regenerates by burning off soot at high temperature and an SCR system that consumes diesel exhaust fluid. Trucks that idle a lot or make only short trips regenerate more often, and sensor or DEF faults can put the truck into reduced power until fixed.[10]

Symptoms

  • Frequent regeneration messages
  • DEF or emissions warning lights
  • Reduced-power mode

Check before buying

  • Scan for stored emissions codes
  • Confirm the DEF tank is full and the fluid is fresh
  • Ask how the truck was used (highway vs. idle-heavy)

Frequently asked questions

How much horsepower does a 6.7 Powerstroke have?

It depends on the year. Super Duty pickups were rated 400 hp from 2011–2014, 440 hp for 2015–2017, 450 hp for 2018–2019 and 475 hp from 2020. The 2023 High Output version is rated 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft.

Is the 6.7 Powerstroke reliable?

The most documented concern is the CP4 high-pressure fuel pump, which is sensitive to fuel contamination and is covered by a recall on 2020–2022 trucks, so fuel-filter service history matters.

What year 6.7 Powerstroke has the CP4 pump problem?

The class action covers 2011-and-later trucks with the CP4 pump, and recall 24V-957 (with follow-up 26V-158) covers 2020–2022 Super Duty and medium-duty trucks. Check any truck’s VIN for open recalls before buying.

When did the 6.7 Powerstroke get the 10-speed?

The 10-speed TorqShift automatic became standard with the 6.7 for the 2020 model year, alongside the jump to 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft. Earlier 6.7 trucks use a 6-speed automatic.

Who builds the 6.7 Powerstroke?

Ford designed and builds the 6.7 itself, at its Chihuahua Engine Plant in Mexico. It replaced the Navistar-built 6.4 Power Stroke for the 2011 model year.
