Ford Mustang problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

For the 2005–2014 S197 Mustang, the most important item is a Takata airbag inflator recall covering about one million cars, plus MT-82 manual shifting complaints on 2011–2014 models. The 2015–2023 S550 has oil cooler hose and 10-speed park recalls, and the 2024-on S650 has early recalls for rear knuckles and wiring.

CarWhere lists 8 documented Mustang issues, including 7 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, engines, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source.

The dual-stage driver frontal airbag on 2005–2014 Mustangs can take on moisture over time, and the inflator can rupture in a crash. Recall 15V-319 covers about 1.02 million cars, and NHTSA’s file advises not driving affected cars until the inflator is replaced.

Symptoms

  • No symptom in normal driving

Check before buying

  • Confirm 15V-319 is closed on the VIN; do not buy a car with it open
  • Ask for the dealer invoice showing the inflator replacement

The S197 Mustang was also included in Takata passenger-inflator campaigns phased in by region and model year (16V-384, 17V-024, 18V-046, 19V-001). Recall 21V-081 covers cars that may have received a Takata inflator as a replacement part.

Symptoms

  • No symptom in normal driving

Check before buying

  • Run the VIN for every airbag campaign, not just the driver-side one
  • Ask whether the car has had airbag work after a crash; replacement parts can fall under 21V-081

MT-82 six-speed manual

Owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2011 Mustang describe hard shifting into first and second gear, grinding, failure to engage gears and clutch-related problems, with some owners naming the MT-82 six-speed manual. No safety recall has been issued for these shifting complaints.

Symptoms

  • Notchy or blocked shifts into first, second or third, especially when cold
  • Grinding on fast shifts
  • Gear lockout or difficulty engaging gears

Check before buying

  • Drive from cold and make several quick 1-2 and 2-3 shifts
  • Ask about clutch, shifter or fluid changes and look for an aftermarket shifter
  • Check for clutch slip in a higher gear at low rpm

Years:
2015–2017
Engine:
See recall for affected engines

On 2015–2017 Mustangs built from February 2015 to August 2016, a hose can separate from the engine oil cooler tube assembly and cause an oil leak, with a risk of engine damage or oil reaching hot exhaust parts.

Symptoms

  • Sudden oil leak under the front of the car
  • Low oil pressure warning
  • Burning oil smell

Check before buying

  • Confirm recall 16V-779 is closed
  • Look for fresh oil around the oil cooler and lines

10-speed automatic may not hold in Park (2018, 2022–2023)

Safety recall
Generation:
S550 (2015–2023)
Years:
2018, 2022–2023

Two separate recalls affect the 10-speed automatic. On some 2018 cars a roll pin may not have been installed, which can lose the Park function (18V-213). On 2022–2023 cars a loose bolt can stop the transmission from engaging the park gear even though the shifter shows Park (23V-070).

Symptoms

  • Car rolls after being shifted to Park
  • No warning in some cases

Check before buying

  • Confirm 18V-213 (2018) or 23V-070 (2022–2023) is closed
  • Test that the car holds in Park on a slope with the parking brake off

Years:

Some 2024 Mustangs have rear suspension knuckles with a casting defect that can fail and cause a loss of handling and steering control.

Symptoms

  • Clunk or looseness from the rear
  • Rear wheel alignment change

Check before buying

  • Confirm recall 24V-593 is closed
  • Inspect the rear knuckles for cracks during a lift inspection

Clutch pressure line can melt against the exhaust (manual) (2024)

Generation:
S650 (2024+)
Years:
2024
Engine:
Manual-transmission models

On some 2024 manual Mustangs the clutch pressure line may not be secured properly and can touch hot exhaust parts, melting the line. Because the clutch shares brake fluid, this can cause a brake fluid leak.

Symptoms

  • Soft or sinking clutch pedal
  • Brake fluid warning
  • Fluid leak near the transmission tunnel

Check before buying

  • Confirm recall 24V-394 is closed
  • Check brake fluid level and clutch pedal feel

Safety recall
Generation:
S650 (2024+)
Years:
2024–2025
Engine:
All engines

Engine compartment wiring harness ground connections on 2024–2026 Mustangs can fracture, causing loss of drive power or loss of the washers, headlights, air conditioning or engine cooling fan.

Symptoms

  • Intermittent electrical faults or warning lights
  • Headlights or cooling fan dropping out
  • Loss of drive power

Check before buying

  • Confirm recall 26V-547 is closed or scheduled
  • Scan all modules for communication faults

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Ford Mustang problems?

The best-documented Ford Mustang issues are MT-82 manual transmission shifting complaints (S197, 2011–2014). Which ones matter depends on the generation and engine, so check the section for the exact truck or car you are looking at.

Has the Ford Mustang had any recalls?

Yes. Recalls covered on this page include takata driver airbag inflator rupture (NHTSA 15V-319), takata passenger airbag and replacement-inflator recalls (NHTSA 16V-384), engine oil cooler hose separation (NHTSA 16V-779) and 10-speed automatic may not hold in Park (NHTSA 18V-213). Recall repairs are free at a Ford dealer; check any specific vehicle’s VIN with NHTSA to see whether the work was completed.

What should I check before buying a used Mustang?

Drive from cold and make several quick 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. A pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic covers these and should include a scan for stored fault codes.

Is the Ford Mustang reliable?

Most well-known Mustang problems are tied to a specific generation, engine or transmission rather than the model as a whole, and many have a published fix, updated part or recall remedy. Owner-complaint volume by model year is tracked separately in CarWhere’s years-to-avoid research.
