How the VC-Turbo works
The QX50 debuted Infiniti's Variable Compression Turbo, which Infiniti calls the world's first production-ready variable compression ratio engine. An electric motor and Harmonic Drive gear move a multi-link system that changes the pistons' top-dead-center position, so the compression ratio can sit anywhere between 8:1 for performance and 14:1 for efficiency.
Displacement changes slightly as it does so, from 1,997 cc at 8:1 to 1,970 cc at 14:1. In the QX50 the engine is rated 268 hp and 280 lb-ft and pairs with a CVT.[3][2]
