Lexus GX engines, horsepower and mpg

EPA publishes a single GX 550 rating (15 city / 21 highway / 17 combined mpg, premium fuel) for 2024, 2025 and 2026 and does not list the Overtrail's 33-inch all-terrain tires separately. Lexus.com shows the same 15/21/17 for every 2027 grade, Overtrail included. The tank holds 21 gallons. There is no GX hybrid in the US.

GX 550 Overtrail and Overtrail+: what the off-road grades add

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ debuted with the 2024 GX as the first products of Lexus's Overtrail Project. They are two-row, five-seat versions built for trail use. Each comes with 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, black overfenders, an aluminum skid plate and bi-tone paint choices, including Earth with a black roof, which was a Lexus first.

Every GX has full-time 4WD and a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential that splits torque 50:50. The Overtrail grades are the only ones that add an electronically locking rear differential, switched from the console, and E-KDSS, which can lock or unlock the front and rear stabilizer bars independently for more wheel articulation. Since 2025 they have also come with a one-inch suspension lift as standard, which raises minimum running ground clearance to 9.84 inches.

  • 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels
  • Electronically locking rear differential (Overtrail grades only)
  • Torsen locking center differential, 50:50 split (all GX)
  • E-KDSS stabilizer-bar disconnect
  • One-inch lift and 9.84 in minimum running ground clearance (2025 onward)
  • Prewired auxiliary switches and onboard air compressor (2025 onward)
  • Crawl Control in L4, Multi-Terrain Select and Multi-Terrain Monitor
  • Up to 26° approach, 24° breakover and 21° departure angles
  • Towing 9,096 lbs (Overtrail) / 9,063 lbs (Overtrail+)
  • [5][15][1][3]

Is there a Lexus GX hybrid?

No, not in the US. When Lexus revealed the 2024 GX in June 2023, and again at its December 2023 launch, it said a hybrid powertrain would come to the US "at a later date." Lexus's 2025, 2026 and 2027 GX releases describe only the 3.4L twin-turbo V6, and EPA lists just that one GX 550 powertrain for 2024–2026.

On the Lexus newsroom, the lineup menu has Gas and Hybrid versions of the TX and LX but a single GX entry. Lexus has not announced US pricing or timing for a GX hybrid.[5][6][1][16][2]

GX 550 interior: screens, seating and cargo

Every GX 550 has a 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital Multi-Information Display, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lexus kept physical dials for climate and audio volume and grouped the off-road controls near the shifter. A head-up display and 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio are available; a 10-speaker system is standard.

Lexus.com lists the Premium, Premium+, Luxury and Luxury+ as seven-seaters and the Overtrail and Overtrail+ as five-seaters. The second row comes as captain's chairs or a 60:40 bench (the bench is offered on Premium+, Luxury and Luxury+), and the third row is offered with power or manual folding. Cargo space is 10.3 to 76.9 cu ft in three-row grades and 45.6 to 90.5 cu ft in the two-row Overtrail grades. Upholstery is semi-aniline leather or NuLuxe, and the Overtrail grades get Olive Ultrasuede accents.

  • 14-inch touchscreen + 12.3-inch digital gauge display
  • Seats 7 (Premium/Premium+/Luxury/Luxury+) or 5 (Overtrail/Overtrail+)
  • Heated and ventilated front seats standard
  • Ventilated rear outboard seats standard on Luxury, Luxury+ and Overtrail+ for 2027
  • Up to 12 cupholders, 120V AC inverter, available Cool Box

What changed: 2024 vs 2025 vs 2026 vs 2027 GX 550

2024: The third-generation GX 550 launched in six grades (Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail, Overtrail+) on the GA-F platform, with the 349-hp twin-turbo V6, a 10-speed automatic and Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. Lexus quoted a starting MSRP of $64,250 including DPH.

2025: A one-inch suspension lift became standard on the Overtrail and Overtrail+, along with prewired auxiliary switches and an onboard air compressor. The Lexus Memory System and a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column became standard on every grade. The starting MSRP was $65,585 including DPH.

2026: Lexus called the 2026 GX a carryover. With the pricing update of June 19, 2026, it started at $68,335 including a $1,550 DPH.

2027: Lexus says the GX "largely carries over" with minor updates. SmartAccess entry for all four doors and the tailgate is now standard on every grade, and the Luxury, Luxury+ and Overtrail+ get ventilated rear outboard seats as standard. It starts at $69,085 including a $1,550 DPH.[6][15][17][1]

Buying a used GX: which generation is which

A used GX is one of three generations. The GX 470 (2003–2009) has a 4.7L V8 and a five-speed automatic. The GX 460 (2010–2023) has a 301-hp 4.6L V8 and a six-speed automatic. The GX 550 (2024 onward) has the 349-hp twin-turbo V6 and a 10-speed. The GX 460 and GX 470 are both rated to tow 6,500 lbs, according to Lexus.

Because the 2024 GX 550 is included in recall 25V767 for possible manufacturing debris in the V35A engine, check the VIN with NHTSA and confirm the dealer inspection has been done before buying a 2024.[8][14][13][1][4]

Lexus's GX 460 launch material gives the 4.7L's torque as 323 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm and its towing as 6,500 lbs, but none of the official pages we found states its horsepower.[5][8][14][7]

Lexus GX problems and recalls

The most serious documented problem on the new GX 550 is recall 25V767. It covers 2024 models whose V35A twin-turbo V6 may contain manufacturing debris that can ruin the main bearings, and dealers inspect them and replace the engine if needed. GX 460 recalls are mostly shared Toyota campaigns for passenger air bag inflators and low-pressure fuel pumps.
